I’m posting this free EA game separately, as I know we have many fans out there keen on good ol’ DOS based games!
It’s a top down helicopter shooter and rescue game, with arrow keys to ‘fly’ the helicopter and one of three keyboard keys to choose/fire the three weapons onboard.
Desert Strike - Return to the Gulf; is very similar to Jungle Strike (posted Here), but Desert Strike requires DOSBox to play it and only has helicopter missions, whereas Jungle Strike also has vehicular missions and runs in XP. Desert Strike is a mix of straight-forward action-blasting, hostage rescuing, and a healthy dose of inspiration from the first Gulf War, being played over sea and the desert.
The game has an isometric view and the missions in Desert Strike provide multiple objectives so they are good for quite a few hours play.
The graphics and sound are great considering the era they are from, though you might find the helicopter rotor noise a bit annoying! If you capture enemy agents or rescue downed co-pilots and get them safe to a landing spot, you get extra bonuses. It's all great fun!
You get a new password after completing each mission. You have to dodge missiles and bullets from enemy tanks, artillery, AA guns, helicopters and many more, while searching for ammo packs and fuel crates. As you can easily get shot down, run out of ammo or run out of fuel, it isn’t by any means easy, in fact sometimes downright hard! But not impossible, or so you will keep telling yourself after several close but failed attempts at part of a mission! . . .
