Folks who use profanity on a site like this (or just about any site) should be warned once, banned the second time.

Hello again,
I have to agree with Princess. The practice of deleting words or moderating members who use profanity in the comments should be adopted immediately.
I’m no prude by a long shot, and I don’t usually comment on whiners and the like, but this isn’t exactly an 18+ website and I believe that GOTD has a duty to protect children here.
Shame on those posters whose vocabulary immediately reaches for profanity no matter where they visit. Don’t you see that it’s a comment about you and who you are?
Now I’m glad that I don’t visit GOTD at a time when my grandchildren are around.
GOTD - I realize that you need to tread a fine line with regard to censoring speech, but please - take more responsibility when it comes to children.

Sorry, I should have said that I agree with the same kind of comment by Princess in the comments today and Ozzie here.

I delete them when I see them.
Best I can do.
If it's on the front page which I cannot edit I email admin, if you happen to see it here, pm both myself and BuBBy and either one of us will delete it, we are in opposite time zones.
So email the links please.

Hi Lee,
I hope you didn't think I was saying you didn't get to the comments sections soon enough - nothing I said was an actual criticism of either GOTD or you.
Coming to the forums was more a 'heads up,' because I know just how busy everyone with responsibilities must be on this website.
This came in from another concerned member:

Thanks GAOTD! Nice little utility!
Half the time my 11 year old son is standing behind me reading over my shoulder as I usually read the reviews before I decide whether or not to download. Was pretty horrified to see the use of the “F word” bandied about today. We homeschool, so we had the opportunity to turn this into an interesting discussion on how those who have little grasp on the English language resort to this vocabulary and what a show of ignorance it is. So while I’m stunned that this language is allowed to bleed through in the reviews, I give the moral lesson and English lesson of the day a 10! However, it’s not a lesson I care to repeat with my son. If profanity is allowed, we’ll just skip coming to this site every day.
This came later in the day - and is in response to my earlier post:

I downloaded this and I honestly can’t find the use for it. I mean…I get the general idea but it seems kind of lame to me.
If I choose to use profanity it’s my choice. I honestly don’t care what you or anyone else feels about that. “Don’t you see that it’s a comment about you and who you are?” what the hell do you mean? Of course it’s who I am. If I felt bad about that I would never use any profanity. It’s my personality. Therefore I don’t care. Good day to you…f@#$%^.
I sincerely hope that GOTD sees this as written abuse and goes even further than simply deleting his offensive words. I hope they see it as serious enough to make contact with this person and either put him on notice or ban him.
I thank both GOTD and yourself, with your efforts in maintaining the credibility of this website. :)
I'll email you shortly.

edited above post... no need to quote any obscenities verbatim (I'm pretty good at filling in the blanks).
BTW - This "time zone" is online now... :P

Well all I can do is send a message to the site administrators. As Lee said - outside the forums - all "us moderators" can do is observe (in disgust) like everyone else.
Part of the problem with banning is people can effectively post comments anonymously. That is why comments are "moderated" before appearing on the site. It seems several are slipping through.
Actually reading posts is the only reliable way to moderate, as simply checking against a list of "badwords" is trivial to b y pa ss - and easy to dis@_ble.

Hello again Bubby,
I really do thank you for your efforts, and for taking this issue seriously. I apologize for not editing the F word out also, I had meant to while bolding the sentence in which it appeared and ended up forgetting I guess.

I have a question,
when I make a comment on a giveaway, I have to wait for my comment to be moderated (posted) - what exactly is the moderation for, if it's not to catch/block things like profanity, rude comments, etc? I don't really understand.
Posted 17 years ago # -
It is supposed to allow for someone (a moderator) to check the comments before appearing on the website. Some comments checked for would include profanity, abuse, spam, or links to illegal content.
Ultimately the decision to display a comment on the website or not, is left to the discretion of the site owners & moderators. There is no guarantee that a posted comment will appear - just as a letter written to the editor of a newspaper has no guarantee of ending up on the newsstands.

Why not have two new threads on the forum.
1. DAILY COMMENTS [APPS]
2. DAILY COMMENTS [GAMES]a) Drop the current Comments section.
b) Move the Comments moderators to the forum, to help out BuBBy and Lee.
c) Everyone has to be a member and log-in to leave a comment. The current comments area is practically redundant. I rarely go there as it is a complete waste of time, wading through junk comments. I want to know two things about software,...
1. Is it functional, feature rich, useful, and a worthwhile download.
2. Are there problems with activation, program bugs, suspected malware, etc....But I visit the comments for information and what do I find?
eg.
#1 "Yippeeeeeee, I'm first to comment"
#2 "D'Oh! You just beat me. Looks like I'm third"
#3 "Ooh this looks good, I might try it"
#4 "My grandchildren will love this"
#5 "No thanks, it's not for me"
#6 "You mean I sat up all night waiting for this. Oh well, there's always tomorrow"
#7 "Oh Nooooooo! Not another screensaver"
#8 "It's not a screensaver"
#9 "Don't you guys have anything useful to say?"
#10 "Yeah,,Go F&#$ yourself, retard"
#11 "Don't talk to me like that, you angry young gentleman"
#12 "I find this program to be very useful. It does everything the developer states it will do. It can be a little resource heavy, but the GUI is brilliant, the program is packed with features, and the menu structure makes it easier to navigate than similar 'brand name' programs. Very useful. I rate it 8/10.
#13 "Hey youz guys, I have to go to prison for 5 years. If I download it now, can it still be activated in 2012?Anyhow, I expect nothing will change and this type of thread will continue to be necessary.
