Here's the second of my games today. More wll follow tomorrow. The game plays in Windows, but it may be better to play it via DOSBox as playing it in windows the game has sound problems. Check out Wizzard of Ozz's DOSBox tutorial (which you can find in the Games discussion stickies if you're not sure how to set up DOSBox. It's really easy and will open up a whole new world of free games from the pre windows era, many of which, game play wise are better than a lot of todays arcade games.
Krustys Fun House (<1Mb)
Krusty's Fun House is a game based on the popular TV series The Simpsons by Matt Groening. Back in the 90s, when the show was at its hype, game developers couldn't help getting their hands on it. In this game, you take the role of Krusty the Clown.
Krusty's Fun House has been infested by pesky rats and it's your job to get rid of them by directing them to the traps operated by Bart, Homer, Sideshow Mel and Corporal Punishment. To do this, you can pickup and drop items (get on top of them and hit the Pickup/Drop key) along the levels in order to control where they go. The rats will only move in one direction and turn around upon hitting something bigger than them.
However, the rats aren't your only worry. In typical platformer fashion, some levels have enemies who's only purpose is to hurt you and get in your way. You can get rid of them by throwing pies at them or using some other weapon you may have picked up along the way. You can get weapons, bonuses or even unlock secret areas by smashing certain blocks along the levels (stand next to them and hit the Fire button).
When you start the game you have a bunch of rooms (levels) that you can get in, just enter the door you want. Some are locked until you finish the previous levels. Some levels may not be locked after you finish them in case you missed something like a secret area, so you can go back and try again. After you finish a set of levels you'll get a code so you can continue from that point on.
After you get rid of all the rats in a level you just have to head back to the door you came from to finish the level. If you wanna restart the level you're in, just hit the Quit button, though that'll cost you a life. Speaking of lives, one of the flaws of the game is that you can't accurately tell how much health you have left. Your only hint is that Krusty will look tired when he's stopped in case his health is low, but even then you can still take some hits. I guess some might consider this a feature to make the game harder.
To round it off the graphics are very nice, simple and cartoony, and the music is also fits the game's style. Not much to say about the sounds, they do their job. The controls are redefinable but in any case here's the default ones:
Controls:
Move Left - Left Arrow
Move Right - Right Arrow
Pickup/Drop - Down Arrow
Enter - Up Arrow
Fire - Ctrl
Jump - Alt
Pause - P
Music On/Off - M
Sfx On/Off - S
Quit - Q
You can just skip the copy protection by hitting Enter (don't type a code). Sound may not play in Windows XP.
