Google Chrome OS: What You Need to Know.
Google launched the initial release of its Chrome OS platform, which it first introduced in July of 2009 at a press event in San Francisco today. The computing interface is entirely web-based and runs atop Linux.

All this "nothing but the web" stuff seems like it would make offline work difficult in Chrome OS, but you can work offline in Google Apps and have the changes sync automatically as soon as you get a connection again. Printing is possible too, via the long-awaited Cloud Print feature.

Google unveiled a beta version of its Chrome OS and an early test version of its branded netbook Tuesday morning, a big bet by the search giant to help drive computing to the cloud — and to the popular web-based services that are its bread and butter.
Acer and Samsung Chrome OS laptops will go on sale in mid-2011.
With a strong focus on speed, the Chrome OS promises nearly instant boot times of about 7 seconds for users to login to their computers.
