IT seems like Microsoft is planning to kill off XP next year :(
and I started to really enjoy XP
As the article says...
Robert Epstein, Microsoft's European spokesman on Windows licencing, said: "There's no significant change with XP compared with how we have done it with other operating systems."
He added that PC makers could get hold of licences until 2009 if they bought them from third-party suppliers rather than Microsoft.
Mr Epstein said withdrawing XP licences had no implications for long-term technical support for the product.
"This is purely about availability of brand new licences for brand new machines," he said. "We'll continue to support XP for some considerable time."
Microsoft has a well-established programme that governs the lifecycle of its products and how long they have before licences stop being offered or support is withdrawn.
So how is this different to any of the previous versions of windows? I don't need to buy any more licenses of XP... I have plenty already.
They are not killing it off.
They are not giving anymore o.e.m. licences to pc makers anymore.
They are trying to encourage Vista OPS for newly built systems.
XP is the best OPS since windows 95.
I am a pro user so should be good till 2010 at least for updates and security fixes, so, roll on SP3 which is a year away.
I'm getting a new PC with Windows XP Professional soon... Is it any better than Windows XP Home?
Other than the price and the boot up logo, you probably won't notice a lot of difference - a lot of users I know just prefer the "Professional" name. It sounds more "powerful" but they can't explain the difference between pro and home... and they really don't use any of the pro features.
But they are happier, and so is Microsoft.

If buying a new PC with XP now, I'd be turning it down unless it also had a Vista upgrade thrown in - best of both worlds actually, as I don't consider Vista anywhere near ready, with drivers still of beta quality for many items of hardware, and software support also a shambles.
For the next year, I'd say that Vista is a complete waste of time and effort, now maybe Microsoft are about right with the phase-out, but any organization not wishing to introduce Vista, had better make sure they have enough XP licences to tide them over until it's time for "all change". Dual running XP and Vista syatems is an unwanted complexity.
There are computer suppliers rushing to buy more XP OEM licenses, Dell for one. They, along with others, earnestly tried to play nice with Microsoft by selling almost all their new computers as Vista only.
Returns and customer complaints regarding Vista now has them back-pedaling. Complaints regarding lack of support for third-party software and removable devices (standard USB, mass storage) that worked fine in XP not being recognized at all by Vista.
I don't blame them for complaining. If a mass storage thumb drive or MP3 player can be recognized by XP (and even by MAC and Linux!) then it should also be recognized by Vista and without Vista insisting on a "driver" that never came with the device in the first place.
Hello,
I got my HP with XP pro preinstalled. I also signed to LiveOneCare and, while checking my system files, it asked me to insert the XP disk. I couldn't let LiveOneCare that I had not such disk, so I contacted LiveOneCare support and, since they didn't know what to do, they escalated the problem to their corporate support.
I talked to a nice lady who was not able to fix the problem either, so they are sending me a copy of XP free of charge. She guaranteed that I will receive it in 5 to 10 days and if I didn't, to contact her again. I am buying a laptop soon and if it doesn't have XP pro, I am buying one without an OS and installing Ubuntu on it (just kidding). Dell has made an announcement saying that they will keep selling systems with XP pro, home or media edition. You can also buy a license straight from M$ and as far as I know, they will sell it, even after the year is passed.
