Would I be allowed to download a giveaway, run active.exe and install a few days later? I know this can be done, I just want to know if GOTD allows this.
Is this allowed?

No, No & No.
Won't work as activate is time and date dated.

1. On the day of the giveaway, open the zip and run active.exe
2. Keep the zip
3. A few days later, run setup.exe and install
4. Use the software. Is this allowed?
It is still sort of installing at the time of the giveaway..---Lee, are you saying that it captures the date on your computer when you press active.exe??

Hi Bob,
you can try it... but some giveaways won't let you run a setup.exe when the giveaway is over. Some programs might validate new registrations with the developer the first time the program is started. In the past some developers disable new registrations using the GOTD codes when the giveaway period is over.
Also if you have problems getting something to work, you are more likely to be able to get help while the giveaway is current. Saying you have problems with the giveaway installation, a week after the giveaway is over - isn't likely to result much help from GOTD as the conditions state you must install the software while the giveaway is running.
Otherwise you take your chances, and the risk is entirely yours.
I would at least check the program works, and the setup.exe is ok while I am still able to redownload or get issues fixed. After the giveaway it is too late.
Hope that clears things up. :)

But, will GOTD allow this, even if it works? Is it against their rules?

As far as GOTD "rules" go - there is nothing that says you cannot do what you suggest - only a statement that installing the software within the giveaway period is required for the software to work correctly.
With some giveaways, doing what you suggest will work. Other giveaways it won't. The problem is, the giveaways where it won't work - you will not discover until it is too late to do anything about it.
But if you want to take a chance installing the software after the giveaway is over - go right ahead.
Personally, I'd want to confirm everything is OK before the giveaway ends.

So the answer is it is against the rules?

No. It is not against "the rules", but it is not supported or recommended.
Basically if it doesn't work, you are "on your own".

ok. Thank you BuBBy.
