Alawar weekly bargain bin
I received an email today Oct. 4 about a weekly sale of 3 games for $1.99 each. The email is dated Oct. 1 so there are 4 days left. The three games are:

Yes, I have purchased a couple off Alawar. They are a good company and you will have no problems. I think Plimus does that for them and they even e-mailed me a month later telling me to check my statement and everything just to make sure. You will have no problems.

Hi Terri,
I've purchased many games from Alawar (around 70 plus). They are a decent game company (in fact one of my favorites for purchasing arcade games) I sometimes beta test for them (In fact I beta tested Amelias cafe, and got a free copy for doing so). Not done any this year as I got tired of the HOG's and Time management games.

Yes it was; though at the time I was a little unhappy about it because they had a two tier system. There was a small group of us who got free games, but the other group didn't; which I though was really unfair.

This week's bargain games are: Mystery Stories - Berlin Nights (hidden object), and Nicky Boom and Huru Beach Party (both arcade games).
I don't know if any of these are available elsewhere for free, but I'm sure if they are that someone out there knows and will post it here!

I installed Mystery Stories - Berlin Nights for a trial, but the installer didn't ask where to install it, and it defaulted to C:\Program Files, which is NOT where I want it. I seem to remember people mentioning this about Alawar before. Is there a way around it, or is it a take-it-or-leave-it approach with them? I sent the same question to their Technical Support, but with most questions, I get better results here, so I figured I'd try both.
Running Windows XP Pro SP3.
I'll post if/when I get a response from them.

Hello!
Please download and install the latest version of the game from our site.
When you press "Try now" to download the game you get a pop up windows that asks you where you want to install your game.
I made sure there were no popup blockers interfering, but still didn't get anything asking where I wanted to install the game. Has anyone had it work the way they say it does?
And here's something really weird: When I ran out of trial time, and the game shut down, my Desktray disappeared! Yeah, it came back after a reboot, but I had to use Task Manager to shut down, as I didn't even have a Start button, and clicking where it usually is didn't do anything.
Yeah, I've emailed all this back to Alawar's Tech Support.

I've never had any problems with Alawar games apart from one breakout game several years ago that refused to work on XP It worked on an old installation of Win 98 and works on Vista and Win 7, but it always threw up an error message when I tried to play it on XP.
I also never had problems with support, but then I used to be on their primary beta testers list and had direct contact with a couple of their game designers and other ancillary staff. I always found them very helpful and also prefered purchasing their games because there's no DRM or games manager to instal, though you can opt to use their game box, which occasionally (supposed to be every month, but it rarely changes every month) gives you a free arcade game.
When you are done with their games you can always pass them on to a friend or family member, wheras games from say big fish have to be installed via a games manager, you have to be signed into your account for the games to work, and they are not transferrable.
The only downside with Alawar is they only show the latest and most popular games on their site. If you want a game that's not shown you have to google the name of the Game and Alawar to find the game page, or go to their sister site Gametaxy (or something like that - usually you get a shotcut installed to the desktop to that site)
I just Googled to find the correct spelling for the sister site and the only post to show up was another post from this forum, lol:

WR, I did a bit of Googling, just now, and this is the closest I could find to Gametaxy games - http://www.freegamefinder.com/play-free-online-Gametaxy+-games. Seems that the Gametaxy.com domain is up for grabs, according to one site I found.

Whiterabbit, I'm running XP Pro, and didn't have any problems with games until SP3 was installed. I did get through the Berlin game from 2 weeks ago, wasn't anything I'd want to keep. Thanks for the info, you and Sue.
Anyway, the Bargain Bin section has been coming and going, with flaky links, but at the moment it's there, so here goes:

The whole Bargain Bin section disappears from Alawar's homepage sometime on Monday, and then reappears (intermittently?) sometime later, maybe Tuesday. And the links from their homepage are flaky for awhile, now sometimes showing the price as $1.99, and sometimes as $6.99.

Is there advertising in the game? Did anybody read the Eula and other fine print?
I have (and like) Alawar games, but am always cautious when "free" games are advertised. Especially, when there are no FAQ and no Terms&Conditions to find on the site.

I never got a solution from them about their wrapper not working on any of the games I installed. They just stopped responding to my e-mails. I guess I'll have to contact my credit card next to get the charge reversed since they won't do it. I'll never buy a game from them again. The funny thing is that my monthly Free Games still play with no problem.
Magic Encyclopaedia: First Story and Treasures of Montezuma 1 are also available from MyPlayCity. Just watch out for any toolbars or anything during install. It opens your browser upon exit but doesn't hijack anything. There is NO advertising during the games.
Terri, I had that ONE game where the wrapper just didn't like my machine. Other games have had no problems. They may have changed the wrapper and that's why the new ones don't work but the old ones do. It could also explain my wrapper problem as it was the last game I got from Alawar (other than the free one they gave me as compensation).
As for your emails, I had to change what email I was using with them because for some reason, I started having problems with receiving emails from a lot of the game companies on Comcast. I would receive the newsletters and advertising emails but not any problem emails. I switched to using Yahoo and have had no problem since.
Good luck getting the charge reversed. That should send a message to Alawar!
