Hi..figured someone here could help me out! In other post said I was cloning daughters OLD machine and finally got that done using Acronis True Image. I cloned onto my external HD.. chose utilities, manual option, then proportional and created image. Her machine is SO old it took over 12 hours! Had to do it that way since I don't have a laplink cable!
Now puleeze tell me how in the world I get that clone off the external HD and installed to her newer machine?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I went on their site and looked and looked, it told everything it could do.. but not HOW to do it!! DUH. I'm getting confused between back up, restore, image, etc.

Hi Copmom.
Just popping in.
I don't know which version of Acronis you're using (they changed the interface in version 11)
But first of all you'll have to create a bootable Acronis CD on a computer (for instance on yours).
Connect the hard drive with the image to your daughter's computer(using usb)
Next launch the boot cd on your daughter's computer.(make sure the computer is able to boot from cd )
Next chose the recovery-restore option to put the image(archive) on your daughter's computer.
Disconnect the external drive when done.But...I'm not sure you have a valid image, because it took so long to make it.
The drive could have been heavily fragmented.
Did you verify(validate) the image(archive)?-edit-
Ps I would advice to create an image(archive) of your daughter's new computer using the backup(image)feature of Acronis on the boot cd ,just in case.
Make sure you don't forget the (usually hidden) factory restore partition.Posted 14 years ago # -
Hi Robert.. I knew you would know what to do! As for validating the image.. it took SO long because her older machine is as slow as molasses in January! And she really didn't have that much stuff on it.. she was mainly concerned about losing her Outlook Express, address book and email. I believe I have v10. If I have Acronis installed on her newer machine, wouldn't that do it instead of a boot CD? Yes the machine is booting on the CD drive first. And I don't know how to verify that I have the image archive?

So you have Acronis installed on her computer...
I want you to create a bootable rescue cd on it.
Choose "create bootable rescue media".Next try and boot from the newly created Acronis boot cd to see if it actually works.
Next create an image (archive) of the new computer with it selecting all drives(thus including the 'restore'partion and boot) using the backup feature.
This will launch the backup wizard.
Next validate the archive.(using the 'explore and validate backup archive' wizard)Use the same wizard to validate(check) the archive of the old computer on your external drive.
Next continue as I explained earlier.
(I hope this makes any sense so far...)
-edit-
Be warned though. If the old computer had an Oem XP on it,you might NOT be able to activate it on the new computer unless maybe if they're from the same manufacturer.
PS Acronis supports 'hot imaging'(archiving) too but I'm not in favor of it.Good luck!

Will try all that and report back! It's been a long week trying to get this done.. first the computer store sold me a computer with VISTA on it.. I told him I do NOT want Vista.. anyway, long story short, I got rid of it and installed XP. Made the CD be the first to boot, put in the XP CD and voila, that worked! They're both Dell as far as the OEM. Oh.. her old machine is an HP. Then the monitor went out day before yesterday.. friend said she had one I could have (no charge).. great? NO! This is gross! She's got a roach problem!! I will NOT live with those 'things'! ARGH. We put that monitor in a plastic trash bag, sprayed it down. Called her (after she had assured me it was 'clean'.. yeah, sure! Said I was bringing it back, she said toss it, which I did! We both vowed to NEVER take anything from her house ever again! Bought a new monitor yesterday. You do NOT get something for nothing! So all this is why I've had a problem trying to keep my head clear and accomplish anything! Right now I need a cup of coffee! Went to plug the coffee in and found I had forgotten to make up a fresh pot last night.

Copmom,I'm confused right now...
Reading your previous post I think I understand you already installed XP on her new machine (wiping Vista I assume).
In that given case wouldn't it be (a lot) easier to back up files from the old computer and only to restore those?
Look for the .wab file (address book) and take a backup of the eml files (email),simply using drag and drop and maybe copy the contents of the 'My Documents' folder. If you have a full version of Acronis you can also extract files from the archive.
PS I can only vaguely imagine the things that lived in that computer screen.LOL.
Could someone please scratch my back now...Posted 14 years ago # -
Yes, I did already install XP on her new machine.. Vista is GONE! Am running what you said to do earlier, if that doesn't work, I'll look for the .wab and email files.
I can NOT stand any creepy crawlies!!!! I bought a LOT of bug spray yesterday and doused everything down to be sure all critters are gone! Couldn't even eat yesterday.. totally lost my appetite due to a knot in my stomach!

copmom - if your daughter "was mainly concerned about losing her Outlook Express, address book and email," here is the link from Microsoft that contains the detailed instructions. These are what I use each time I backup my own OE email, address book, etc. (on XP): How to back up and to restore Outlook Express data: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670.
You'll read at the end of the article that it applies to OE 6 and Windows ME, but it also works for XP.
Good luck!

Thanks Suze.. all my efforts to restore things are not working. Keep getting a blue screen and options of last known configuration that works, set up with command prompt, safe mode, etc., etc. This isn't working. I guess my next option is to just reinstall XP again to at least have it running then will print out whatyou said about backup and restore OE data! At least the clone thing only took 45 minutes this morning instead of the original 12 hours before!

That image of the old machine probably was corrupted if Acronis needed 12 hours to complete.
If you imaged the freshly installed Windows though,it should only take about 20 minutes to restore it.

How to keep roaches away from inside case?
Sorry :) I had to post this.

Gee graylox.. you sure know how to gross people out!! I was raised in NYC and those bldgs. were so old they were ridden with roaches. They'd bomb one apt. and the critters would move to another apt. I vowed I'd never again live anywhere that those things lived. And so far, so good, until I get me a FREE monitor! She swore to me that it was clean!
