You can get Cities XL one of the best city building games available today for less than £4 for the Standard Edition or just over £4 for the Deluxe edition. Released last summer there used to be an online element to the game but this was withdrawn back in March 2010 due to lack of interest. The single player campaign is still one of the best you can get for this type of simulation game. It's a steal at less than £4. I'll post some images tomorrow if i have time. :)

Wondering if you have seen/read the following.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1203672
Word is there are a number of serious problems with the game that the current owner of the license has announced will not be fixed (The original developer of the game ran out of money & went out of business) The current developers are about to release CitiesXL 2011 in October.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1446248
In General the tone of user posts in the Steam forums about this game are very negative (also from users who purchased the game before the 75% offer began)
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=742
It is useful to test the waters before a purchase & visit the Steam forums to check if there is any consensus from other users about the game.
The best reason I can see why this offer has any real value - in the event that CitiesXL 2011 is released in 2 weeks and it isn't plagued by the serious bugs that the 2009 version was - there is a special price discount of 50% off for users of the previous version. (Of course if the CXL 2011 game is rubbish - 50% off is meaningless)

No I'd not seen the negative posts over in the Steam forums; I'd already purchased this from Direct 2 Drive last year before the original developer went bust. I never play the game for more than 30 minutes to an hour at a time and have not noticed any of the reported memory leaks. Even with that problem I think £4.74 for the Deluxe version is still worth it. When I purchased it I was even considering subscribing to the online game, but shortly before carrying through the subscription they announced the online element was going to be axed. I personally have had no problems playing this game, though I'm sure if I was to spend hours playing it, the reported memory leaks would take their toll on my computer. The answer is to do as I do and play it for shorter periods and build up your city over time. I get much more enjoyment out of seeing a city grow slowly, but that's just me. I do remember having problems with the registration when I first purchased the game because there had been a mistaker made when I registered the game; it took the developer nearly a month to sort the problem out for me, but once I was able to log in and play the game it was okay. I do find having to log in every time I want to play the game annoying, but that's a small price to pay for playing this excellent and good looking game. It does what I'd expect it to do, allows you to build cities, using pre formed environments, of which there are loads to choose from. I think it's better than most other city building games such as the classic Sim City 4, (most of which I also own). The only game of this genre that I think is better is Tropico 3.
I think a lot of the negativity stems from the axing of the online element to the game. There were a lot of customers who felt cheated when the developer didn't deliver on the promises they made (new buildings every month, plus new maps and more).
The game is dirt cheap and well worth the money in my opinion. The cost is virtually nothing, and I think it's a bargain at the price.
Thanks for pointing out the 50% off offer BuBBy. I haven't visited the site for ages and didn't know about it, so will probably take the developer up on their offer. The latest version has lots more buildings to play around with, as well as some other enhancements which you can read via their website. (See BuBBy's link above).

The following images are from the soon to be released cities XL 2011:
It all depends on what you want from the game as to whether you're going to think it's worth the paltry £4 (plus or minus a few pence depending upon which version you purchase). I just wanted a city building game and got what I wanted. I also bought Tropico 3 around the same time. Both are city building games, though Tropico 3 offers a lot more than just city building. I highly recommend both. and if buying a copy of the 2009 edition will give you 50% off the new title so much the better.
When you consider the average price of an arcade game three years ago was over twice the cost of this game is today, I truly believe you've got a fantastic bargain. :)

A common description I have seen about this game goes something like beautiful, but boring. It seems like the solo version has been simplified. For example the only transportation system is roads. It doesn't have the complexity of managing the special needs of different working classes like its predecessor. There are no disasters to deal with like tornadoes or fires. It's major differentiating feature and focus was going to be the online aspect which didn't work out. So as it stands it seems to be a pretty game that can be fun for a while, but soon becomes boring.
I think at this price if you like this type of game, it might be worth trying and perhaps it will get you a discount on Cities 2011. Personally, since I already have many other games to play, I am going to wait. If 2011 is better, it will probably be available at half price a year from now anyway.

That's true Campy. It's probably why I only play the game for short periods of time. Still, I've never regretted purchasing the game last year. And so far I've not found it boring. :)
I didn't realize you'd bought the game BuBBy. Let me know if you have any problems playing it. :) (Assuming you don't do what I do and play it in bite sized chunks instead of spending hours at a time playing it).

Just though I'd post an update on the problems with this game. I've done a search of the web and the memory problems mentioned over in the steam forums are definitely web wide. I personally haven't really noticed the problem, but I've never played it for long periods. It may pay to try the demo first to see how it feels . If you're like me and play such games in small doses the problem shoudn't really affect you, but if you like to spend protracted periods playing it may be a big problem.
The ame still has it's proponents, but I would err on the safe side. It does worry me that the game will continue with these problems through to the latest version unless the developer can assure the community that it's a new engine or at least a total rebuilt; but I suspect it's just going to be the old game with some tweaks and additional content.

I think the online mode "trade" section has been identified as the memory leak, this bypasses it.Posted 14 years ago # -

All that is required to play the game fully is the Game itself, and the two expansions.
Note - the Deck Unlocks and Foil Conversions aren't required - You unlock decks while playing the game. Purchasing unlocks just allows you to skip the single player part of the game for players who are only interested in playing multiplayer with all the decks already unlocked.
The foils make your cards appear "sparkly" and "shiny" which many feel makes your cards harder to read (not really a good thing). Also once you use the Foil conversions - you are stuck with them - you cannot go back to cards with the standard appearance. If in doubt - just purchase a foil conversion for one deck (and unlock) and decide for yourself.
The sale is over now - I'm just mentioning this if anyone is considering buying 'the lot' so they know what they are actually paying for. (I saved a further 50% by purchasing without the deck unlocks and foil conversions).

The best-selling first-person action game of all time gets even bigger with more epic new multiplayer content! The Modern Warfare 2 Resurgence Pack delivers five incredible new multiplayer maps. Take the action to exciting new locations, then battle across legendary landscapes from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
"Carnival," a large abandoned theme park that offers lots of unique vantage points that work well for all game modes. The once vibrant rides now sit idle and neglected as perfect cover points in one of the most original multiplayer locations for Modern Warfare 2.
"Fuel," a massive oil refinery with extremely long sightlines great for medium- to long-range firefights. The spacious surroundings offer a great sniper advantage; offices, warehouses, and buildings house objectives and provide opportunity for close-range firefights.
"Trailer Park," a medium-sized mobile estate with a maze of tight flank routes and lots of cover. Junk covered yards, deserted trailers, and debris-riddled surroundings offer intense firefights with a wide variety of vantage points and routes available.
"Strike," a large urban desert town, excellent for medium-to-large team games. The large monument, connecting streets, and surrounding buildings offer great firefights in Team Deathmatch, and great vantage points for objective team games.
"Vacant," a deserted Russian office complex offering a great mixture of interior and exterior combat. Long hallways with minimal cover points offer a fast escape route for potential runners, but high accuracy and fast aiming is required when advancing through this large complex.
