It was my intention to post games every day this week, but I was too intent on finally installing my windows 7 discs, which were a little problematic. I finally got things sorted last night, though discovered that the ultimate edition that I'd bought for my main computer had the 64 bit disc missing. Thankfully Amazon have agree to exchange the package for one with both discs, despite me having purchased it back in June.( they usually only allow returns within a 28 day window).
I've got quite a lot of games to post, which I'll post over the next few days.
Nimbus Sky Princess:
A breathtakingly beautiful shooter game that is also a blast to play. However, the gorgeous eye candy did take some liberties with many core shooter traditions that we have grown to love, making the experience of playing this title a bittersweet one. Take to the skies in a brutal battle against the pod Empire, and save Prince Lucius
When the king doesn't seem terribly interested in dropping what he's doing in order to save the poor kidnapped Prince Lucious from the clutches of the evil Pod Empire, his adolescent daughter steps up to the plate. Princess Nimbus might be young and bratty, but she's packing a need for speed and an itchy trigger finger. Hopping into a pimped-out fighter craft and stealing off into the skies above, the daring princess sets out to rescue her capture sibling by blowing the Pod forces out the sky. Evildoers beware: Nimbus Sky Princess is locked, loaded, and read to kick some Pod ass.
As far as Game Maker games go, Nimbus Sky Princess is about as polished and enjoyable as they come. This side-scrolling shooter is chock full of twitchy action and challenging adversaries to destroy, but it's the awesome presentation and subtle gameplay nuances that set it a cut above the pack. Though your ship's default cannon is slow and weak, it can be upgraded with chargeable bombardments, shields, shotgun blasts, energy weapons and other upgrades to assist in tearing apart the mechanical Pod ships and heftier boss foes that seek to stop your rescue attempt. Weapon upgrades are also supplemented by speed bursts and temporary shields that can deflect incoming fire back at your enemies. However, charged shots, shields, and some other weaponry will overheat if used too frequently, leaving you vulnerable for a short time.
The princess only has one ship to work with. Fortunately, every time you get shot out of the sky, you have a last-ditch chance to recover and stay alive by playing a fast-paced directional-button pressing mini-game. Nailing it restores you to full health and lets you continue on your way. Flub it, and you'll get a steaming helping of Game Over. It's a little draconian, especially when you've plowed through several levels only to have to start over from the beginning, yet it's a great tweak to the average shooter formula. Nimbus Sky Princess features tight and exciting gameplay, and the expertly done background art and pixel art for enemy ships gives it a little something extra special.
