Thanks for the feedback, guys. :-)

My 1st impressions about the program...
MPEG Streamclip is a tiny download, yet the utility is dependent on the software libraries that are already on your computer. I assume if you have an updated operating system with the major audiovisual codecs properly in place, then no further downloads would be required. Whereas some conversion packages provide fixed pre-sets for exporting video (and audio) files, MPEG Streamclip allows you a degree of freedom in specifying the parameters to suit your preferences. The key elements here are to research the specifications for the audiovisual formats you are using and a willingness to experiment with sensible combinations. I made a couple of casual attempts to see how MPEG Streamclip functions and have reported my results below.
MINI-TEST #1: EXPORTING MOV TO DV for playback
1. I filmed some short clips with a pocket HD videocam (like the one pictured here):

2. Next, I imported a few of the clips into MPEG Streamclip.

3. I then exported the lot as a *.DV file

4. Last step, I double-clicked on the *.DV file to view it. Playback in SM Player was crisp and smooth.

MINI-TEST #2: EXPORTING MOV TO AVI for DV post-processing
1. I modified the video parameters and exported the selected clips again, this time as an AVI file. I left the audio settings unchanged.

2. Once the AVI file was ready, I imported it into Adobe Premiere Elements, where the windowed video played back without distortion. However, Premiere Elements was still forced to render the preview, as I had not implemented the strict settings for the DV AVI standard during the conversion. Also, the ambient sound came out completely garbled, possibly because the default audio settings I had approved were incorrect.
