Try running Process Explorer and hover over the svchost.exe that's eating up CPU to see what services run under it. Then list it here.
(My computer, when the CPU gets eaten up, is usually with explorer.exe. I have no idea why that would happen. It seems some other process's CPU usage gets tacked on to it.)

svchost.exe is part of the operating system and is a catchall for various services that need to be run, particularly by the operating system. Process Explorer is a great replacement for Task Manager, going well beyond that program's capabilites. It will let you explore each process and determine things such which program that particular process belongs to and in svchost.exe's care determine exactly what processes are under it's control. Process Explorer will allow you to kill and restart processes as you choose though in some cases that can result in needing to reboot your computer. Unfortunately, in my experience there is little you can do about svchost's appetite for cpu cycles except restart your system.

If the service is a non-essential one, and it constantly eat up CPU cycles, it could be disabled.

I had an svchost.exe process that was eating up about half of my CPU (3 GHz), and I didn't know what it was until I got Process Lasso (given away here a while back). It shows what all those svchost.exe processes are doing. The culprit turned out to be something called HPZ12, which has to do with the camera card reader in my lousy HP PhotoStupid 8150 printer, and was triggered when I put a camera card in the printer.
The fix was simple: Process Lasso let me flag only that one instance of svchost.exe as a disallowed process, and simply shut it down whenever it started.
[As for the printer, it seems I wasn't the only one who was majorly dissatisfied with the PhotoSmart 8000/9000 series. I've since replaced it with, believe it or not, yet another HP, this one an All-In-One, which I love just as much as I did my old HP DeskJet.]

Hotdoge,
Since Autoruns pointed out it was the Microsoft Update Services that caused the high cpu usage:
Please check if you have the latest Windows Update Agent 3.0 and in particular update 927891 installed.(applies to XP SP2)
This update decreases the duration of a scan that uses the Windows Update Agent and the time your system may appear to be unresponsive .You're not to worry about the stale sys entries you mentioned above..
The newer versions of Autoruns are also listing drivers that don't specify an imagepath, in which case the implicit default location is system32\drivers.
