Any Windows Calendar Help?

Buckleysmom got excellent help this week on a problem with 2003 Outlook so I wonder if I can get some Windows Calendar (for Vista32 SP2) help. For the second time, Calendar is broke. It refuses to pop up with a scheduled reminder for an event.

I am looking for any way to fix it other than creating a new user. Creating a new user is NOT an acceptable solution. That cause more headaches than it solves.

It was working fine until earlier this week. Because of the previous problems, we have a weekly "Calendar Test" reminder. My husband just closed Calendar rather than "dismissing" the reminder this week. The next morning, it popped up with the reminder (now overdue) and then crashed when I tried to close it after the dismissal. It has not provided any reminders since.

I was told the problem is a corrupted user profile but a crashing program (for any reason) should not corrupt the user profile!

Does anybody have any ideas how to get this to work? For now, I have it scheduled to pop up every day at 12:30 so we can at least see the calendar and look for upcoming events manually. It's not ideal but the "in-your-face" appearance of the Calendar should prevent missed events.

Dragon....Yes, I did get excellent help.....however I am sad to say it was short-lived. Today when I opened Outlook crashed again, BUT it only crashed once, the second time I started it it was ok. The point at which it crashes is when it's trying/starting to load my calendar reminders so I suspect we are facing the same issue. I've been through this in the past and we did everything everyone mentioned at various MS and other sites. Every single time, if we got good results at all they were only temporary. I've noticed lots & lots of other people seem to be having the same issues and it doesn't look like anyone has come up with a permanent solution.

So....I'm sorry to say I don't have an answer for you. I know how frustrating this is because I have used the calendar reminders for years and I really depend on them. I am going to search on calendar programs and see what's out there. I did this a long while back and found nothing suitable but there's always new stuff coming out so who knows?...maybe this time?????

In the meantime, if anyone has any other suggestions for the dragon and the doggy's mom we would both be grateful.

Oddly enough, the problem seems only to be the calendar that was "resurrected" from the original user as the calendar quit last October. I created a new calendar and re-created the 5 entries involved in that area and then deleted the original calendar entries. Then I rebooted and waited. I knew I was supposed to get a reminder at 8:15 tonight to run maintenance on one board I admin. I got the reminder! The silly thing just suddenly decided it doesn't like these old calendar entries.

Now hubby will re-do his reminders (and remove the old ones).

No guarantee but it looks like I may have gotten this beast working on my own!

I would still appreciate any ideas of how to prevent this kind of problem from recurring.

I'd suggest to backup your Dragonlair's calendar ics file at regular intervals.
Normally that should be C:\Users\Dragonlair\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Calendar\Calendars\Dragonlair's calendar.ics

But if you don't have too many reminders ,there's an option in the Windows Calender to export each reminder as an ics file.
(and to import them when necessary)

Outlook 2003 Calendar also has an option to save reminders as an ics file.

I never knew where the calendar's were saved. They're tiny files! Thanks for the info. I found them and will make note to save them. I can't help but wonder if the problem I had last fall with it was a corrupted .ics file, NOT a corrupted user profile as Microsoft insisted.

Robert......thanks, I'll check into that too.

Dragon....it seems Microsoft's answer to everything is to say it's a corrupted user profile. I haven't found making a new one to be the fix for anything.

Wizzard Edit: Thunderuko is Dan Chartrand, the developer of vueminder. Because Mr. Chartrand joined the forums only to post about his software and because it is a commercial site with a commercial program, his post has been removed.

BK,

Creating a new user did help the Calendar problem. However, it introduced a whole host of other problems that took months to work out (some never did work out).

Thanks Thunderuko....I don't believe I've ever heard of that one...I'll go check it out.

Diane....in my mind if it fixes one issue but creates others it's not a fix at all :)

I'll find out later today if the calendar is "fixed". I've got a Tuesday afternoon "Calendar Check" scheduled. We have split our calendar into 3 separate ones. One for my reminder for my main site admin work, one for home and one for "tests". I'll consider the freebie offered if this doesn't work. The basic Calendar does what I need. I don't use Outlook or anything else and just need a stand-alone simple reminder that wakes up when I tell it to for the reminders!

I'm still missing reminders. I did download and install VueMinder Lite. It's unfortunate that it has to stay "live" but I guess that's what I have to do.

I don't like the fact that it wanted to stay up OVER the desktop but I was able to turn that off.

I don't need anything fancy. I just want to know when my EMS chats are (the schedule changes), a reminder to do the maintenance there and reminders of family/friends birthdays and anniversaries. I don't want to connect to any other calendar or anything like that. For what I need, Windows Calendar worked fine but it obviously not stable.

I was not happy about it but I did tell VueMinder to wake up with windows. I'll "hide" the task bar entry as I don't expect to ever use it.

Why does everybody wants "fancy". What's wrong with simple?????

AAAAAAGH! I'm glad I didn't remove my old calendars! I was able to easily import them to VueMinder but only the events and recurrences imported - not the reminders! I had to reset each reminder manually. Now it's hubby's turn to reset his reminders!

I downloaded VueMinder Lite too and I'm doing some tests with it before I move everything over and set it all up. The good news is I turned off the reminders in the Outlook calendar and Outlook hasn't crashed since.

I agree....sometimes I wish they wouldn't try to spice everything up so much....just make it work.

I still have Calendar set. I'll remove everything from there AFTER I'm sure this is gonna work!

easily import them to VueMinder

Can you tell me the steps you took. I've tried everything, even went to VueMinder's site to make sure I was doing it right but nothing will import. UGH! I'll need the loony bin by the time I'm done with this. I've never had so much trouble with a program before! (Not VueMinder....but Outlook)

I simply verified where the .ics files were with Windows Calendar - C:\user\<username>\appdata\local\Microsoft\Windows Calendar\Calendar\. I just used the import command and pointed to each of the calendars I wanted from that folder. Appdata is normally hidden but I need to get in it so often that I "unhid" it ages ago. It sure saves time unhiding/hiding files. However, it took awhile to work through the whole folder unhiding everything!

Yeh......I unhid stuff a long time ago too for the same reasons.

Those are basically the same steps I took with Outlook but it just didn't work, which is pretty typical for Outlook.
