Hi guys, I'm finally on vacation in Orlando. I went to play one of the many films I brough with me and couldn't find the DVD icon. Even through the media player, no DVD icon. I checked before I left yesterday morning and it was working okay, so I can't understand what's wrong. :(

I've tried going to bios, but this emachine laptop doesn't have the usual setup options that I'm used to. The DVD player appears in the list, so I'm assuming it should show in My Computer, but it doesn't. I checked the system options and can't find the driver so am going to see if I can find the appropriate one on the net. In the mean time I'd apprecaiate any suggestions you may have.

I actually just went through this same thing buddy. I don't know if it's the same spot for your particular drive, but I had to go into my registry and delete the Upper Filters and Lower Filters for my dvd drive. I'd try googling for the location of your particular drive in the registry, and then Delete the Upper and Lower Filters. Then just reboot and it should be fine. I don't know what caused mine, but I went through it just about 2 weeks ago. Hopefully that helps you.

ah, I knew i missed something else when I posted on the aston2 thread. yes, that is one you gotta do sometimes.

or is it the player app shortcut? you can go to the installation directory and make a new shortcut to the executable....

are you saying it isn't in the windows explorer drive list, or did it vanish under device manager cd-dvd-roms?

if the former try checking control panel> admin tools> computer management> disk management and see if it lost it's drive letter- edit it to assign a letter.

If the former try control panel> add hardware and force it to reinstall the dang thing and the driver for it.

One of the last things I remember seeing before I packed the laptop was it updating to SP2 (I think). I've read that there is a problem that can cause my problem, and have also read about the upper and lower filter deletion fix, but was wary about doing it till I could create a restore point. first thing I need to do though is delete some of the games I installed as the HDD is almost full and I can't create a restore point.

I went ahead and deleted the upper and lower filters and guess what........ Yeah it worked. Big smiles all around, now i'm off to the movies for a few hours... here comes Harry Brown and one of my favorite British actors Micheal Cain. :)

Hi goodgotd, I'll tell you what, I was so relived at it working. I was thinking I was going to be stuck without any movie distractions for the duration of the vacation (sad I know, but I'm stuck in the hotel room for 2 days out of every 3, so things looked like I was going to miss watching all the films I'd been saving this morning.

Harry Brown was a particularily bleak but good film about violence, drugs and gangs on a delapidated London estate. The best part of the film was the last quarter; it was worth watching just for Michael Cain (IMO). I then switched to Bangkok Dangerous. I only bought it because of Nicolas Cage, who I like and the fact that it was set in Bangkok. The film was generally slated when it was released back in 2008, but I've always enjoyed watching Cage, even in the bad ones. I married my wife in Bangkok, and though it would bring back memories of our time over there; (which it did). Anyway, I enjoyed the film despite the bad press.

cool I'll add 'em to my list. speaking of Nick Cage, Knowing is a pretty interesting movie- a combination of a foretold disaster(s) movie with a leavening of new beginnings. interesting premise.

OTOH, The Rock is a generally good action flick (sean connery and nick cage) that's got over-the-top hollywood let's blow the details anywhere we can. watch the movie, then look at the truly staggering collection of goofs on IMDB.com. oy. like to watch it, but I have to turn my brain off.

Thanks for the well wishes. :) The Rock is a good film. I picked up a second hand copy of the film lat year. It cost me less than a $1. Great film. I intended taking a still image of the bit where part of the prison was blown up to be used in my Battlefield 2 review as there was a map dedicated to the island. Though the incomplete review has been put on the back burner for the last 3 years I'd still like to complete it. :) I've not seen Knowing; sounds intriguing, so will have to look out for it. :)

I'd better continue our discussion of films in the moviedrome thread, lol.
