For those of you that don't know they are experimenting with new features. The latest experiment is a new Facebook application. It doesn't do much but reminds you about Giveaways. There's no profile box or tab but they may add that in the future.

Me no do Facebook, Twitter, or any other social networking site.
As far as I'm concerned, every one is Bad Mojo. like, check theregister's analysis: Facebook simplifies controls but continues exposing users and earlier stories.
And Google is on my 'avoid if at all possible, obfuscate if ya gotta use it' list. Especially since the surfacing of them harvesting information from unsecured private wi-fi by 'accident'. And then getting real dodgy about copping to what.

I agree with GoodGOTD. Facebook is a hacker's heaven. They even have a new policy of selling your private information to 3rd parties without your knowledge or consent, AKA "instant personalization." Find a bit more information about it here. Apparently there is an opt-out option now, but it is buried in the 170 privacy choices available. Most people don't even know that this is going on. Heck, I was frightened when I signed up for Facebook and it started giving me friend recommendations of people I know in real life. I am still not sure how they know who I know, but something is a bit dodgy here. That is why there is very little information about me on my account. I enjoy my privacy too much.

They seem to be able to tap into your contact list on the e-mail address you provide. It scared me too when I first saw it.
As of May 5, there is a NEW PRIVACY setting called "Instant Personalization" that shares data withnon-Facebook websites and it is automatically set to "Allow." Go to: Account
>Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites >Instant Personalization, and uncheck "Allow". BTW if your friends don't do this, they will be sharing information about you.Posted 14 years ago # -
Why in the world would GOTD need/want to mess with Facebook? What will that accomplish that can't be, here? Like a lot of other people, I really don't mess with Facebook all that much, though I do have an account. I tried 'getting into it', but it just wasn't/isn't for me, really. Now there are some legitimate businesses that are on Facebook, now, that I have chosen to 'follow', like Kim Komando, and Hancock Fabrics. As for personal info, I have entered the barest of necessary info about myself, and have opted for the most private settings I've seen available. 'Course come to think of it, maybe it's time for me to re-evaluate everything to make sure it is still properly secured. Then again, maybe it's time for me to re-evaluate the importance of 'following' anyone on there at all.

Terri - thanks for the heads up about "Instant Personalization". If they keep adding that stuff I might just delete my account...

Frankly, I think they're like Google.
Once they have your data it's there forever.
I gave Gmail just enough to try when it came out, bailed *real* early, and the cutout account suppliers I used back then have fallen by the wayside, so they don't *have* current data they can find me with.
I pointed a couple of throwaway mailing lists at it, and as far as I'm concerned I don't *have* a gmail account.
I tried logging in a while back from a far different location using somebody else's ISP, and as far as I can tell it's no longer accessible by any means I could find.
Good riddance.

Gosh, I just went over there, and tweaked my account, some more; to the max, actually. If I do one more thing, I may as well deactivate my account. The one thing left that I would like to see changed is the full name displayed. I would MUCH prefer just a user name.

"As of May 5, there is a NEW PRIVACY setting called "Instant Personalization" that shares data withnon-Facebook websites and it is automatically set to "Allow.""
Terri, while I was there to do my tweaking, I first checked out that part, and was surprised to find that "Allow" wasn't checked by default. I didn't have to worry about unchecking anything. There WAS one page full of items that you could leave unchecked, or check them, but I can't remember what it was, except that it pertained to personal info.

RosnSC, there is no need to insert your full name. You may use a pseudonym.

One of the activist groups I follow, MoveOn.org I think, recommends keeping as little personal information as possible on Facebook. The delete function is also a viable option to keep the information from spreading any farther, but I think like Goodgotd and believe that the info is still there. Oh and Goodgotd, I use my G-mail account the same way. Only for spam and absolutely no personal information on the account.

Thanks for the heads-up, Chip, although I don't do facebook (due to privacy concerns) it's still good to know the Giveaway team is hip and cool and into all this new technology - way to go, GOTD.

no comment.
OK, one- 'hip and cool and into all this new technology ' translates to 'didn't look before they leaped'. I call it the two-legged lemming effect.

I agree with GoodGOTD. and way no need !

Well I disagree with many of you then lol. As unnecessary as it may seem, integrating with social networking sites like Facebook is a great idea. There are many people there and spreading the word on Facebook could draw newcomers to the project. Also many people my age use Facebook and teenagers like software. And I think people should know there is a great alternative to pirating software and that they can find legal free software here everyday. I know many of these features seem pointless to you all but they do have a method to their madness. They are simply trying to find the best way to gain more followers and popularity.

That's if you are concerned with the project over control of your personal info. I'm quite paranoid, before I got busted up and disabled I was a *professional* paranoid and chameleon.
And from watching the nonchalant no-precautions way my granddaughter pokes around the 'net, I have a great bad example to not emulate.

Personally I don't use the social networking sites, again I worry about privacy, but a lot of people do use them and if it's another way for software developers to get in touch with the GOTD team, then I'm ok with that.

I tried to post a funny cartoon about Facebook privacy, but it didn't work :(

I Love, Love, Love Facebook!! Most of the family is on there and church members, some folks I haven't seen or heard from in years. It's got great games and I really like being able to see what the fam is doing without having to make a phone call to everyone. Like anywhere on the net some info isn't for public consumption.

take a look at the Facebook Users Hit with Clickjacking Worm thread to see one reason why I stay clear.
