   I was really excited at seeing Aston 2 again because I wasn't able to install it on my main computer when it was available last month. Unfortunately I'm now unable to access anything once the computer has booted up. Everything comes to a grinding halt. The only way to turn the computer off is via the reset or off button; the three fingered salute wont work and I can't access restore to be able to return to the usual boring XP look.

   I'm sad that it's not worked as I was impressed with the look of it.

   At the moment I'm struggling to delete the program. I tried to uninstall it, but to do that I first have to turn the program off, but I can’t find an off button. The drop down menu in the tool bar doesn't include a off switch. :(

   Any suggestions before I pull my hair out?

   Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I've already tried that. I can uncheck the appropriate check boxes, but it then freezes. Also I can't get into Safe Mode.

   I've been trying to fix the poblem on and off all day with no luck yet. :(

   Hmm.. can't get into safe mode? Did you try tapping the F8 key while first booting up the computer? If you are able to get in there, try loading the "last good configuration" from the menu. If that doesn't work, then boot up again with the F8 and select "safe mode" this time and then system restore once booted up. Not being able to get into safe mode is odd... but not unheard of.

   I've been there before. Maybe some system files are locking up the computer. In such a case, I usually use one of the many boot discs available for bypassing drive C: and deleting unwanted software. You can download UBCD which is an iso image that is designed for Windows XP. It boots up a PC from the CD drive into a completely graphical interface that's very similar to Windows. From there, you will be able to access the C: drive.

   Hi Stephen,

   I did experience similar problems installing Ashton on Windows 7.

   Some of the options that proved to be successful:

   1)Try evoking the taskmanager pressing Ctrl-Shift-Esc( all OS ) and choose log off Stephen.
   Logging back on should resolve the problem.

   2)Disable any security program when switching shells.

   3)As an alternative,look for Shellswp.exe in the Aston program folder to switch shells.

   3)You could also try to end ashton.exe manually in the taskmanager ,using Ctrl-Shift-Esc,...but make sure you chose the explorer shell first!...

   if you put an aston2 icon on the desktop, click on it- it's the shell swapper, not aston2. then click the radio button for "explorer" and it should shift you back, and you can then uninstall safely.

   If you didn't make a desktop shortcut, there should be a 'shell swapper' entry in the Aston2 start menu folder. use that the same way. choose explorer and hit ok, and it logs you off and when you log back on it's back to normal business.

   if you had installed the Aston Menu before Aston2, there should be a 'exit aston' entry under settings in the start menu. That's what I have, and it doesn't even log out. Just shuts down aston and returns to explorer. At least on WinXP sp3 Pro.

    Hi guys, thanks for all the suggestions. I tried most of them before I left for my vacation. None worked, but only because the computer freezes before I can follow through. I'll return to the problem when I get back to the UK abd then let you know how things work out.

    At the moment I'm trying to figure out how to get my DVD icon back. That's disappeared and I'm not able to play any of the movies I took with me. :( I'm gonna check the internet for solutions, but any you may have in the mean time would be welcome. I'll post this in a seperate thread. :)

    are you saying it isn't in the windows explorer drive list, or did it vanish under device manager cd-dvd-roms?

    if the former try checking control panel> admin tools> computer management> disk management and see if it lost it's drive letter- edit it to assign a letter.

    If the former try control panel> add hardware and force it to reinstall the dang thing and the driver for it.
