I've never had a problem here, nor have I ever been talked to by an admin. I have no grudge. I'm being totally objective in my opinion and observations (over the years). Whether you disagree or not makes no difference in my eyes, as my opinion no doubt makes no difference to you. I've been here a while and I don't remember when there was a time when there were too few admin (again somewhere we disagree I guess). I also know a few ppl over the years, that don't post here anymore because the "school teacher" mentality some of the admin have taken toward them (in effect, them not wanting to feel like they were little children over something so trivial so they don't even bother posting). "The admins win. I can't believe they're so childish themselves over a stupid conversation" was one exact quote I remember (PMd to me at another site, as I usually recommend this site to many I know).

I'm not at all condemning the entire staff here. GOTD can have as much staff as they want, but it's clear to me that quantity outweighs quality with their choices. I'm not going to single anyone out here because it's my hope that all the admin look on my criticism as something to learn from rather than somebody "making problems". As I implied before, you won't find much negative criticism here anymore because most criticism is met with the GOTD cheerleaders who feel they have to stick up for any "attack" on the site or staff and is usually followed with "if you have a problem take it up with the admin". So we wouldn't see criticism (or problems) here publicly and if there was, ppl are told to PM an admin and keep it out of the forums.
Back on topic: Thread jacking doesn't deserve a PM from an admin IMO. If it's such a non issue and everyone has done it (or does it inadvertently) as it's been discussed here and comes with along with a "now you're one of us" attitude, then a PM from the admin isn't necessary and is overkill when a simple comment in the thread to "keep it on topic" would solve the problem. It would also let everyone know to "keep it on topic". A PM from an admin takes on a more serious tone.. and actually scares ppl into wondering "what did I do wrong" and "what is thread jacking" as the case with Terri here. Many visitors here are new to computers and forum communities and are sometimes apprehensive about posting at all, and in this case we have someone who "publicly" left over an admins PM rather than just leaving without saying a word. I chalk it up to an admin's over exuberance to do a job, that in some cases isn't needed. While I know there are underage visitors here, that doesn't mean when an admin has to step in, it's with a tone that is directed like we're all underage visitors.

I hate to tell you all this but this thread has become one of the most interesting ones I've seen here in a lonngggg time. It's even brought a few "old timers" out of their dusty nooks and crannies. Woohoo!
Teacher-lox (now I picture you with one of those buns on top of your head)....I really think it was just a big misunderstanding of some sort. Just the fact that Terri thought what she had done could do harm to someone's pc is proof of that. I think she just misunderstood her error.
I don't envy you guys and the job you have to do here. As another good lookin admin (you know who you are) once said to me, sometimes moderating can be like babysitting (not an exact quote but it was something to that effect) so I can sympathize with you all.

Perhaps 2-Sheds never saw the thread so doesn't fully understand. For those of us who have, it is clear why the comment was made that it should be moved to a new topic. I've stated it once before and had BuBBy back me up on it...that thread had ALOT of great posts in it that were WAY off topic and needed to be posted in a separate thread as there was a great deal of interesting information that others would find useful but would neglect looking in that thread for it. I have no problem with a little off-topic banter, but in this case the appropriate action was taken. I'll amend my 8 on and 8 off topic numbers I cited. I checked and it was 9 on topic including the original question, and 11 off topic. How often has anyone been reprimanded for going off topic? I repeat, the valuable information in that post, facilitated a new thread posting.
I'm getting a sense that 2-Sheds is lumping moderators and admin together as admin due to the fact that graylox is a moderator and not in fact an admin. I believe the forums to be a peaceful place where most everyone gets along 99% of the time. RARELY, and I say this as fact, does a moderator or admin step in on posts and delete something or reprimand someone and when it does happen, they are cordial. I regularly check the admin side of the site, and I can see any posts that have been deleted and other than the occasional double post, it's almost always spam. 2-Sheds seems to be referring to older times when the staff was slightly different. There's been some major changes and I, for one, believe this place is better for it.
I do have 1 question 2-Sheds, if you have a problem with the forums or something that happened...why wouldn't you want to be told to contact the admin with your concerns? I would want my problem resolved. If the "over-exuberance" were truly as bad as one would lead us to believe, would many of us even bother coming here? I mean after all, if all of the off topic comments are deleted, members are being sent nasty pm's from people of a higher power, and criticism were removed to the extent that is suggested...where's the entertainment you come for?
I know a few that have taken that route and they're much happier just watching the GOTD cheerleaders chime in anytime someone gives some kinda criticism and they get a good laugh.

If a moderator has pm'd you and you feel they were being unjust and rude, it's never been easier to let us know. At the top of the PM is a box to add a member to the PM. Simply type in mine, whiterabbit's, or BuBBy's screen name and we'll be able to see everything. If something needs taken care of, we'll handle it. It's happened before and the problem was eradicated.
Well out of the three admins Bubby must be the good looking one because the GOTD logo is pretty sexy...and I still want pizza!!!

I prefer the term "Guns" over being called "Cheerleaders" LOL. In either case if I agree with a mod or admin it's because I do, and whomever posting is being overzealous in there comment(s), I'll speak out. In graylox's case I agreed with what she did and why she did and I'll voice it when some &/@^*$@*) comes along and makes comments that are only opinionated and untrue.
Guys we all can't be mod's and admin's. Now its time for me to go back to my little dog house.

I do know the post. My comments broaden to more than this one incident. I'm not talking from older times when it was just Lee and Bubby. I've visited this site daily from day 1. I'm well aware of the changes here as well as threads, topics and discussions even though I don't get involved unless I have something to say or ask. I never said I come for the entertainment. But now that you mention it, I'm getting an inkling on that feeling as this thread continues. I never said I was PMd by an admin. I never said ppl were getting "nasty" PM's and comments were being deleted. PMd yes.. but "nasty" puts a tone on it that I didn't. In fact, I don't even have a problem. My opinion is totally objective and from observation. I know it's hard to believe that someone could have a constructive critical opinion without having a personal experience related to the criticism but welcome to objectivity.
And to answer your question; I would PM an admin or anyone here if I did have a problem I wanted resolved, addressed or even if I had a question. As this was a public discussion I figured I'd chime in and risk being misunderstood as having some kind of agenda beyond putting in my "2 cents".

Ditto. I'm CONFUSED most of the time! The topic we're all learning is how to THREAD HIJACK. We are all becoming experts, wouldn't you agree? As for pizza and mashed potatoes, I go to sleep thinking about them because I keep reading about them here! And am getting real curious who's the good lookin' admin. Does he eat pizza topped with mashed potatoes?
On a serious note, members here are extremely helpful, intelligent and a real NICE bunch of folks, w/o exception, as far as I'm concerned.

I've stayed away for a while but I did get a lot of PM's from members asking me to stay on the forum and I want each and every one of you to know how much I appreciate it. The reason I got so upset was the tone of the PM I received from the mod. I understand you have a job to do but please realize that what you consider thread hijacking and on or off topic is VERY SUBJECTIVE. To this day I don't know why what I did was considered thread hijacking, I was just commenting on what the original poster had said which to me was not changing the topic. Perhaps if the PM had simply said that the mod thought my posts would be more appropriate in a separate thread and was moving them, I would not have gotten upset. I don't like being reprimanded and told I am continuing to do something wrong when I have never been told WHAT I am doing wrong. When I first starting posting here I was reprimanded for starting threads in the wrong area and since I find it very intimidating trying to figure out what section something should go in, I very rarely start new threads. I will continue to post occasionally but please if there is a problem, let me know what the problem is and don't come down on me for not doing what you think I should be doing.
OK, no hard feelings. I'll look in from time to time (especially to look for Michelle's Gamehouse posts but I won't be posting too much for fear of "breaking the rules" which I still do not understand.

Lol, seriously I'm glad you are not leaving the forums. I don't know who the mod is that made you want to leave but I'm sure they were seriously just trying to help and not critisize you. It's hard to judge a tone from someone in just plain text so I doubt they meant to seem as if talking down on you. Don't let a little mishap stop you from posting. We are all just trying to help eachother make the forums a great place for eveyone. Either way welcome back to the forums :)

@Terri218 - welcome back. Please know that you are not the only one who has experienced the wrath of certain forum mods.
In fact, I received a very nasty PM several months ago from one of the forum moderators, and I expressed my concerns to two of the senior mods, as well as to the GOTD execs. Unfortunately, I never received a reply from anyone affiliated with GOTD - and this caused me to stop participating actively in the GOTD forums - until now.
In summary, Terri, I agree with you 100% - that it is the harsh tone of the MOD PMs and guidance that I have a problem with. A person can say whatever he or she wants to say, but it is how one says it that is very important.
We are all human beings - we all have feelings - no person is superior to anyone else - and we should all respect one another - and treat one another as we wish to be treated by others.
That said, I've decided (from this point forward) not to let any "over-exuberant" mod keep me away from GOTD - no sirreee, Bob!
Anyway, Terri, welcome back again, and best wishes to everyone.

Well the admins and Chip got these PMs we are speaking about, and a lot of people seems to know them already... It seems, Terri has already spread it, so it's no longer private.
If you think that I said something inappropriate - please tell me. Or if Terri gives her okay, I'll copy and paste it here.
Some users prefer to get a PM, when there is something to discuss, others think that a PM is something like being ticketed...well, what about making a list, in which every user tells us their preferences?
I got some PM's too, ref. this topic. In the first I was asked to do something against this hijacking. In all the following PMs several other users thanked me. Only Terri didn't answer after my further explanations, in which I apologised that I didn't know, that she, as a native English speaker, didn't understand the meaning of "Thread hijacking": "Oh-oh, sorry, that I confused you. That was not my intention. I was sure that a native English speaker knows the term "Thread hijacking", and couldn't understand that you did not follow xxxx's hint...."
(As you may know, English is not MY native language)

@ Happyperson: I got the mails you expected - but I think they were not what you wanted to read.
Another thing I recognised: here are some users who mainly raise their voice to complain about other users who are voluntarily helping to run the forums, but the same critics contribute very seldom to the main purpose of the GOTD forums: Discussions related to the daily giveaways or other computer stuff... In better English and (as I think) at least for native English speakers easy to understand, the rules worded by BuBBy: Effective Forum Use

graylox: your post was lovely. YOU were the first who ever sent me a private message. I didn't even know how to open it! Anyway, if memory serves me right you removed something I posted and started a new thread for me. You just plain and simple helped me. I thought it was super, and haven't forgotten it. At that point I really knew squat about forums, or PMs, or what was and wasn't allowed. I personally don't enjoy private messages, per se, because I get confused. I do enjoy reading them.
As for people knowing the words "thread hijacking", I was clueless. In the beginning I thought Terri thought it would harm her computer. That is how dumb-dumb and clueless I was! What's second-nature to one person could be a problem to another.
Sometimes words written on paper don't come off the same way it would be talking to someone face-to-face. Words spoken and body movement mean a lot. Also, coaching someone (as you did with me, graylox) is helpful. Using the word "warning" would have scared my pants off. Come to think of it, one of you higher-up folks wrote to me about something that wasn't permitted that I didn't know about. I got scared, and sort of upset, but the words were written beautifully. It was MY problem I felt; not the writer's.
This thread has become a "catch-all" (and a REAL lesson in hijacking!). I look at these forums a few times a day because THIS thread is so enjoyable. It's good to laugh/smile, and that's what it has done for me. Well, between reading this and all that pavid and BuBBY and etc etc etc have tried to teach me, what a blast!
Chip: y'all did it again. Went out and bought ice cream cones and onions and now I have to make mashed potatoes. No graylox, you're not invited over.

Glad your still here Terri. Sorry that I didn't pm you and I hope that you don't hold that against me. I did post my feelings in public rather than hide my thoughts behind curtain.
Now can we get on with something a little more flavorable! A pizza with lot's of garlic and hot peppers could only be complete by having something sweet after words!
Well this thread has had an angry start but a happy ending it seems lol. I'm afraid I need to close this thread before the food pyramid collapses! :O
We are all glad Terri is back and sadly it seems this thread has been hijacked itself with talks of pizza and such. So I will be eating some pizza now hehe.
