My trial of Alcohol 120% just ran out, and it asked me if I would like to download Alcohol 120% Free Edition at the following page..

Anyone know anything about this, is it legitimate as I have never seen or heard of it and it is not listed on their main web site?

Alcohol 120% is a well-known tool. This "free" version is a special offer of a limited version for home-users. In fact it is not Free-Ware but Ad-Ware:

Very often developers hide their special offers very well and just announce them to readers of their newsletter or via a computer magazine.
After some clicking I found it at last, it seams to be a legit birthday sale.
To be on the safe site ask the developer or support.

Thanks for your reply.
I installed it, and so far all seems well.
Only found out about it as my system clock was accidently put forward, and the pop up appeared.
Maybe no one is supposed to have this version yet or like you say its a special magazine offer or something.
I knew they had Alcohol 52% free version, but never seen 120% Free Edition before, this is why I was scepticle.
Have emailed the developers to find out exactly what it is, wont hold my breath on a reply though.

They actually got back to me (surprise)
This free version is not actually supposed to be out for another 2 weeks, after users trial of the latest version has finished.
Don't see any way of opting out from the software update thing, but it actually seems a bit handy, it let me know what software I was running that was out of date.
I tried to uninstall it, but it also wanted to uninstall the free version at the same time :( but its no big deal.
Everything seems to work really well, I can live with it for a free version of Alcohol 120.

Works like charm.
Even when using advanced setup and pressing 'decline' for a couple of times it installs Smart File Adviser too.But no signs of any toolbar.
But of course you can always remove SMA (and its updater) from the windows startup items...that is if you want to.
Looking out for the final version.

You should know the following. In addition to installing "Smart File Adviser" the free edition modifies these registry keys…
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Associations
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Associations
It changes the file association for application downloads to all go through a php page on a remote web site. It would theoretically then be possible for this web site to:
Redirect your download to another file.
Modify your download, and insert a virus or trojan, etc.
Insert code to scan your PC for back account and credit card numbers.
Send you a file that reformats your C: drive.
Use your imagination for more possibility.
I do not know that it does any of these things, but it easily could, and it could start doing it when it chose to without installing additional software on your PC. It is also possible someone could hack the web site this points to and exploit it.

2 free alternatives if anyone's interested, & not using them already, would be ImgBurn for burning & DVDFab Virtual Drive for virtual optical drives.
ImgBurn is I guess I'll say the geek standard, & it's pretty much portable.

The DVDFab Virtual Drive is the only virtual drive app that hasn't caused me problems -- I like that it can very quickly create a mini-ISO for DVD & BD folders on your HDD, which it can then mount the same as a full ISO file. I also like that it can be turned on/off -- started/stopped like any other software so you don't have services running constantly like Daemon Tools.
