   mfc42u.dll is the module that contains the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) functions used by applications created in Visual C++.

   A game I downloaded tried to load this automatically. I blocked it and have since uninstalled the game, but it is still trying to load onto my computer.

   MFC is bunch of functions that allow easy, but basic GUIs on computers. Most of your applications won't use this, because it doesn't allow a lot of customization, but there is still a decent number of them that do. Its perfectly safe to allow.

   Paranoia getting the better of you? Just kidding. There are a lot of MFC dlls out there. There's also a lot of .Net dlls, and most of the start with vc or vb. They're used by programs created with any of the Visual Studio programs.

   Yes I'm paranoid. I don't understand why one game developer thinks it's OK to update your computer without your permission just to play their game.

   Conversely, you have to also ask, why do developers use programming languages that require external precompiled support files? I guess it's just because it's easier. So really, don't worry. Those files are shared, so if some other program need them they don't have to install the file twice.
