Have you previously been able to install GOTD programs? If so, when/what was the last one?
The two main reasons for your error message are:
- Your archive program isn't correctly extracting the files. In which case the setup files would, in fact, be corrupt.
- Your anti-virus is seeing something it doesn't like and is quarantining one or more files. In which case the incomplete setup files would be reported as corrupt. Check your log files. What program do you have associated with zip files and was it installed recently?
Did you recently change anti-virus programs or update your existing anti-virus program? If so, check the "exceptions list" and ensure that setup.exe is allowed to run.

ever since i installed KIS 2014 i have been unable to install the daily software.
it tells me the installer is corrupt.
if the software is with a activate.exe it runs ok.
if its the setup.exe i allways get the install error even if i disable KIS2014.
there is no corruption with the contents of the zips as if i take it to another pc without KIS2014, the same setup.exe works correctly, but alas its not my main desktop.
given that uninstalling KIS2014 is not an option, has anyone had this problem with KIS2014 ?
why does activate work and setup not ?
are they not both encrypted ?Posted 10 years ago # -
The difference between setup.exe & activate.exe is that setup unpacks the actual software setup files from the .gcd file into memory & runs them -- activate just does something, for example adds a registry key &/or values. If the upacked software setup files are being deleted before they can be run, then the GOTD setup.exe doesn't get the results it's looking for, & so it says the setup files are bad. What you have to do is figure out how to keep them from being deleted or quarantined or whatever.
I've never run Kaspersky so I can't do more than suggest things you might try. Usually there's a way to turn active scanning off, so not every file is scanned as soon as it's encountered. Usually you can turn the antivirus portion off itself, or set it to a minimum level. You might be able to add an exception to not scan or stop the GOTD setup.exe, & that *might* carry over to the software setup files. In the Kaspersky software you *might* be able to find files that were quarantined & tell it to restore or ignore them. You might contact Kaspersky & see what they advise. I'm running Bitdefender, & despite the above I've sometimes had to go into Safe Mode & disable the Antivirus service, then go back into regular win7.
That said, normally I'll fire up win7's XP Mode VM & monitor changes as I 1st install the trial version [if avail.], try to activate it, install the GOTD, & if or as necessary activate that. Often the trial will activate -- is the same as what's enclosed in the GOTD wrapper -- so in those cases you should be able to take advantage of the GOTD just by installing the trial instead.
The VM I use is really minimal, so if an app adds a common file the odds are better that it'll show up when InstallWatch Pro compares a before & after snapshot Often I'll be able to copy the added files & registry entries from the VM to win7 proper, then run & if needed, activate the app. Since you've got a 2nd PC you could try to do the same sort of thing.

I have the same problem as Sergio. I recently switchted to KIS 2104 and get the 'corrupt' message. I actually uninstalled KIS and was able to install the GAOTD program. I then reinstalled KIS.
I wrote a ticket to KIS support and while they were nice about it they told me there was nothing they could do.
This was their message:
This will be hard to fix, because if you exit or disable protection and you still couldn't use those files, than it means we cannot change anything in the settings of kaspersky to allow those files to be installed on computer. It looks as incompatibility conflict between those programs and Kaspersky. Also if those programs are changing every time you download them (that they are different) it also don't give us so much possibility to make Kaspersky compatible with them, because if we will make it compatible with one of those programs, than you will try install other one and problem will appears again. Please try to make sure that you use latest version of Kaspersky:
They then included instructions on how to remove KIS :)

The workaround for Kaspersky, provided you can't switch security programs, is to restart in safe mode with networking then install the program. As you've found, simply disabling the software isn't sufficient, you need a safe boot.
I doubt that everybody who uses Kaspersky has the problem since there aren't thousands of complaints so it's probably "Kaspersky plus something else". Unfortunately, nobody has identified what that something else is so you're left with the safe boot.

If it helps at all, from what I recall of the extensive discussion when the new wrapper was unveiled, the problem is that the .exe files have been compacted or compressed, adding encryption so they can't easily be taken apart. I don't know what the GOTD wrapper uses, but an example would be UPX -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPX
This leads to problems with security software because they cannot look to see what's actually there -- mal-ware uses the same sort of setup partly for smaller file size, partly for that exact reason, that security software cannot see the included files, because if it could it would delete them. For the companies selling security software the easiest solution is to block anything compacted/encrypted, which is their default modus operandi. And the truth is that the GOTD wrapper does behave the same way some mal-ware might behave, though it would have to be rather unsophisticated mal-ware considering security software has blocked this sort of behavior for quite some time now. The cure is for the security software company to dive back into their software and create an exception for GOTD stuff, which the GOTD team has asked them all to do.
That said, Google "bitdefender and giveawayoftheday" & I get 1,350,000 results -- "kaspersky and giveawayoftheday" = 5,180,000 results, both entered without quotes.
"I wrote a ticket to KIS support..."
No offense towards anyone, but over the last 8 years or so I've found across the board, regardless the company, 99%+ of tech support staff you can talk to are worthless. It's not that there aren't good tech folks, but that they want to get paid for being good techs. To make their desired profit margin at whatever selling price most companies do not invest in tech support, Q/A, or in a large variety of test systems in order to make sure their software &/or hardware works with most everything.
One way to try to solve a problem between Kaspersky software & GOTD offers might be to Google & see what others have done, &/or been told by Kaspersky reps. Another way might be to bite the bullet & change security software brands -- if you're in the US at least most can be found on sale, free after MIR. If you go that route do try the software 1st to make sure it does work with GOTD. Another option, the one I use, is to use VMs as possible. Sometimes the GOTD registration number works with the regular software setup app. And another, as Chris suggested, is to boot into safe mode with networking, though in rare cases I've had to disable Bitdefender's service in safe mode, boot into win7 proper, install the GOTD, then back into safe mode to turn the service back on.

I have the same problem: "setup files are corrupted". My antivirus software is also KIS2014. I know there is no solution...

There is a short and easy way around the problem with Kaspersky: reboot in SAFE MODUS with network enabled. Install the software. Reboot normally.
Sometimes I can install as usual, but most of the time it's safe booting.
In windows 8.1, open msconfig and reboot from there ;-)Posted 10 years ago # -
Thanks for your idea. I'll do it your way.

Latest on this problem which I've suffered from since moving to Kaspersky Internet Security. I've pfaffed about with the safe mode with networking option and this used to work in Windows 8.1 Pro, but since moving to Windows 10 my laptop doesn't seem to want to load the networking components in safe mode at boot time, either from the msconfig route or the more usual Shift + restart method.
To cut a long story short, I now exit Kaspersky in normal windows startup mode by right-clicking on the icon in the system tray and choosing Exit. You get the usual warnings of course, and you're unprotected for a few moments, but I've found that this unloads all the Kaspersky components from memory, and allows installation of the files as per normal. I found that it's impossible to unload Kaspersky by stopping processes in task manager as you aren't allowed access to do so. I've downloaded the files as normal beforehand with Kaspersky running and just disable it for the installation process.
Worth a try anyway, eh? Works for me .....

Via the Settings app Windows 10 has you boot to its new version of the Windows recovery environment [winre.wim], where going through the menus you have several options including Safe Mode & something *similar* with networking.
Which doesn't matter -- just info in case it's ever useful -- since you've got a working solution. Thanks for posting it.

In 2016 - after several months of Kaspersky arguing that they were not responsible for corrupting GOTD downloads and no-one had reported the problem, Kaspersky finally conceded there was a bug, but they had fixed it in Kaspersky Internet Security 2017. When I report the bug is still there they again say the same thing.
1. No bug
2. No-one reported it
3. Run download with Kaspersky turned off
4. Run innumerable tests for them with different bits turned off - at my risk of course.
Why was so stupid to renew when I knew they do not provide support?Posted 7 years ago # -
The wrapper used Themida code, which for those who don't know can also be used to wrap malware. I think this is one of the reasons, together with the MyPlayCity games containing adware and possibly a logger that causes problems with some anti-malware programs. The usual error message received when this occurs is that the file is corrupted. Chris and Mikiem2 had adequately explained the steps you can take to overcome this. I haven't bothered to install in safe mode as yet, instead I've just turned off my anti-malware suite and anti-logger temporarily to get the games (and applications) to install. It doesn't happen with every giveaway and some only get stopped by the anti-logger (usually MPC games due to their phoning home step).

Kaspersky IS Kaspersky... Don't look for anywhere near personalized support from them, or McAfee, or Bitdefender etc. And the way the system works, where anyone can upload allegedly infected files to VirusTotal, & have those files automatically picked up by every brand of security software, don't expect false positives to ever go away. Research, & you'll find things like the harmful nature of many browser add-ons created by some security software companies to go with their AV suites.
The easiest route I think is to run 10 & use it's Defender, which is getting better, & at least won't usually muck things up Too badly. But since you paid for Kaspersky, I guess take whatever solace you can from the fact that they're still rated at or near the top by av-test, & when you're not dealing with a GOTD, you're probably as well or better protected than if you bought something else.
