Hi,john connor, when you are talking about the giveaways you got from GOTD, please remember, that you may only install and activate them on the date of issue.
However, when you reinstall your system from a complete backup/image every programme should work as before.Posted 15 years ago # -
I think this site can exist only inasmuch as it is able to keep most of its users from extracting registration keys, etc. for the programs. Obviously, users can reinstall the software just as if they had paid for it with that information. Therefore, it isn't feasible for GOTD to allow instructions on how to do this.
I'm a long-time user who would like to see this site continue to evolve. I would be happy to learn that GOTD had come up with a way to prevent this action entirely. This site's value to me is its focus on software exploration, rather than its long list of "free" software. My hard drive is loaded with software from here that I hardly ever look at, much less use. I often forget I have something till it comes up again, lol.
I'd suggest to GOTD that they find a better way to handle this situation. But I think that is what they have been trying to do from the beginning. I've tried to come up with a suitable suggestion myself, but everything I've come up with seems to be faulty in some way. So far, this site has been able to continue because there are some developers who are willing to take this risk to help advertise or test their products, IMO.
This is the problem with all software, and other digital media: It is too easy to reproduce! A developer wouldn't mind giving away several copies of his software for free if it weren't for the fact that even one copy of his product could be easily reproduced and given to millions of people! And usually only honest people who actually spend their own hard-earned money for it are going to be unwilling to give it away for nothing.
So, what is the industry to do? It tries to come up with schemes to prevent illegal copying and distribution, but knowledgeable users continue to thwart its efforts. And if developers can't make a living from their effort, how can they continue trying?
That's why it is important for people to support the developers of software that they like and use by buying it. Otherwise, developers will just have to resort to adding ad ware, etc. to their products just to pay the bills.

Some companies do use hardware identification and an activation on their own servers though...but the downside is, you'll never know what is uploaded to them so people might consider this to be an intrusion on their privacy.
Still, most of the programs offered here don't allow updates/upgrades so I think Gotd is doing the right thing.
And some of the programs are special builds.Posted 15 years ago # -

Now, back on topic, registry editors. Have you tried regedit? Or are you looking for alternatives?
Everyone, calm down a bit. This is a benign (hopefully) question. It was simply asked what registry editors are there. Also he said "my apps", which does not necessarily indicate GOTD license keys.
@Just James: You're stretching a bit far out. He didn't say anything about GOTD license keys. I don't see why everyone is so riled up about a simple question.
On the topic of license keys, if you need to find Microsoft keys, try SIW (System Information for Windows).

Of course if you purchased the software, most developers have some type of facility (even just an email requesting it) to resend lost software keys, and they are usually happy to do so.
