This weekends Steam deal is a brilliant rally game called Dirt 2. If you have DX10 or 11 graphics you'll be blown away by the graphics. Even with DX9 graphics it's pretty cool. I've played many rally and racing games over the past few decades and this has to be one of my favorites to date (together with the latest Need for Speed: Shift game); both of which have some innovative additions to the racng genre - Need for Speed has an intersting AI, which is adjusted to take account of your own game play, so once you've done your first race you'll feel like you are accomplishing something instead of struggling to win any races, lol.

Just looked into site in passing and noticed this post,excellent game,have hardly been away from it in the last couple of weeks,can't fault graphics and game is great fun to play.Needs a bit of power in your pc for this to get the best out of it though.I'm glad I purchased(pity it was before the offer,but I'm happy enough).
If you like a good racing game this is definitely one to go for,well enough said I'm off driving again !!!!

I ended up purchasing the codemasters package on Steam over the Christmas period so that I could race with my son. The package, which had 18 good quality games including Dirt 2 (and Dirt) only cost £44. The combined cost of Dirt 2 and Operation flshpoint: Dragon Rising (both of which had only been out for several weeks cost me around £60 (~$90) when paying full price. So the codemaster deal was amazing(there were other high end games such as Fuel included in the deal). One of thethings I like about Dirt 2 is that there are loads of different types of race modes; (don't ask me to list them though as i'm not a true rally enthusiast, just a game rally enthusiast, lol)

You can get all three company of Heroes titles for less than £8 this weekend between 22nd Jan to 25th Jan. This is an award winning WWII strategy game with gorgeous graphics. If you have Vista and a DX10 compliant video card you'll be able to take advantage of even better graphics. This was one of thefirst games to incorporate DX10 graphics. The main difference between DX9 and10 is shading and bump mapping, but theres more. for example, if you were to see a flag fluttering in a breeze, the movement in DX9 is rather wooden, with only several movement points, wheras with DX10, the movemnt points number in the hundreds, giving a smooth looking natural movemnt to the flag.

This is a fantastic offer. Well worth investing if you don't already have them. You can buy them individually for less than £3 (~$4.50), which is great news for those who already own one or two of them. now you can complete the set, lol.

Another great deal from Steam. US prices are even slightly better, $2, $13.60, and $2. However, I already have the Steam X-COM 5 pack, have Tropico 3 (Xmas present), and have boxed versions of the Freedom Force games. At this price though I still may pick up the Freedom Force games just for the convenience of having them on Steam.

I did get the Freedom Force pack. What sealed the deal for me was seeing that it would work on a netbook and with Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit). It works great in high detail on my netbook that I use when traveling (1024 x 600 and an Atom processor, but has 2 GB memory and a GS 9300M GS rather than integrated graphics). The Steam forum note I read said that the first one was fine in high detail, but that the second one would be slow unless you turned the resolution down to medium or low on a standard netbook.

Same here. :) Though I think I bought it around June last year when it was on a 80% off deal. I've seen it on sale a few times since then, so even if you miss the deal this time, it's almost certainly going to be around again sometime in the coming months.

The following total war games are now available. The prices quoted have been adjusted to take account of the 66% reduction. If you buy the whole shebang there is a further reduction as well. All are brilliant games and well worth the money. This is one of the best war strategy games around. (Though I love the recently released King Arthur game). The Game

The Trine deal has ended, and was replaced with the Mount & Blade weekend deal. That ends later today (usually 10am pst) as does the fantastic Total War deal that includes five Total War games, including the latest one called Empire: Total War (the others, 'as mentioned above' are Rome: Total War Gold plus the Alexander expansion and Medieval: II Total War plus Kingdom's expansion. I paid more for the Kingdoms expansion back in 2008than than this package. There is a new one being released in a few weeks called Napoleon: Total War, but the ones I mention above are all supeb games and well worth the asking price. You can buy them individually, but there's more off if you buy the whole package. :)

The DLC's for Empire are not included in the deal. but those are also on offer atthe moment. I have all the DLC's and as yet have not come across one unit that I've been able to use. They game is absolutely fine without them. I reckon in a few more months when Napoleon: Total War has become established the DLC's for Empire will be added to the game as a single download. :)

I couldn’t stop playing this when it was released several weeks ago. I’m amazed that it’s already on sale for 50% off. This is the best war time flight sim I’ve ever played. The graphics are out of this world.

The first 30 or so in the sequence look rather blocky, which hides the crispness of the in game visuals, but I think I'd changed the resolution to a lower one for some reason (can't remember why now). Both these games are great fun. Serious Sam for its tongue in cheek FPS action and Wings of Prey for its amazing realism. Both games are easy to play, wings of war may have a slightly longer learning curve, but the tutorial system really helps to get you used to the controls. It's much easier to play than Microsofts Flght Sim X. The only down side i found was the registration process. you had to register it and then wait for an email to verify the game before you could play it. Once that's done though its straightforwards. you do have to deactivate the game if you want to reinstall windows and or reformat. I contacted the developer over this issue because I format regularily and was worried I'd have problems, but i was told there are limitless activations, tohugh you have to request more once you're initial activations are used up. Just a precaution in case the reg code is put on the peer to peer sites.

In the middle of a round of golf on gaming pc when I noticed this post,as soon as I get finished I'll be over to Steam to purchase Wings of Prey, have had the demo a couple of weeks and am definately impressed with it,I was actually going to be getting the game at the weekend, so this time I've got it the right way round as far as the pricecut versus fullprice gamble goes.
It might be better trying the demo to ensure your hardware is supported,to be able to use the joystick I have(logiteck Attack 3),I had to check on Steam forums to find setup info there.

That's true Deserthead, a demo will definitely make sure it can be run on your system. I played ths game for nearly 150 hours in the first two weeks I had it. That's hoe enthralled I was with it.

As for Serious Sam, I ended up buying three copies so that I could play coop with my son and daughter. It's such agreat tongue in cheek shooter.

Hammerfight is a little more pecialist. The physics based game looks beautiful, but the game play is rather dfficult IMO; however, that said I still like the game lots.

I can only recommend all three of them after playing them for some time. I posted a link to a demo in the free games synopsis because I originally though it was a freeware game. when I discovered that it was only a pre release demo I decided to leave it because i'd been posting a pie of physics based games at the time and I though it was worth checking out. Now for less than £3 UK pounds it's a steal (as is Serious sam HD)

I think Croteam the developer is intending to release the second encounter expansion sometime this year before a new game called (provisionally) Serious Sam 3 is released. I'm not sure whether they intend updating the Seriois Sam 2 game as it was only released about 5 years ago and the graphics aren't tht bad. Not as good as this latest release, but good enough not to have a total reskin done on it. :)

On a side note...anyone check out the new UI Beta for Steam? I'm using it right now and it's not bad, but it feels a little bloated....too intensive. But I think it's in the right direction.

First impression,looks ok,will still have to explore it properly though.
10 min later - Unfortunatly it does not seem to have a compact view,takes up too much screen room.
10 after that - gone back to older style,only problem with new version is no compact view,all else an improvement.

You can find out all about Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising by following the link below. The game is less than £6, which is a brilliant bargain. what you get is (IMO) the best squad based shooter available today apart from maybe ArmAII. I personally think it's better than the latest Call of Duty, but that's just a personal preference I have. The biggest difference between the two games apart from the fact that Op Flashpoint is a squad based FPs is I think it's ultimately much more replayable. You have amassive island which you can explore, wherease once you've played the Call of duty single player campaign it's done. Of course you can play it again, but it'll play virtually exactly the same as previously; the game is very scripted, whereas Op flashpoint isn't. both games have beautiful visuals, though Call of duty may appear more exciting (initially).

I've posted images elsewhere in the forums. I'll link to them later. i'm busy with my latest game at the moment (silent hunter 5)

If you're into a more strategic FPS game, (plus realism), you'll love this game. I also love the intro music, lol.

As for the price drop; I reckon Valve are paying codemasters to be able to drop the price so much. I used to buy all my games from my local Games store until I started using Steam last January. Now virtually all my games are bought via Steam.

Personally I think Operation Flashpoint is a much better game than Call of Duty. I think what puts some palayers off is this game is played almost like the real thing. It's easier for you to die while in combat, there's no run and gun and often you have to plan your strategy before you attack otherwise you lose all of your squad; not only that you have to treat you wounds if you get hit otherwise you bleed to death. The squad based controls are also not as easy to use as just playing a single person . you have to learn how to control and use your squad otherwise you wont complete your missions. Brilliant game, which has similarities with ArmA II

The reason I think it's better than Call of Duty is because you've got a massive island to explore and it's got much more replayability than Call of Duty. If you're an online player COD may also seem more appealing, but I think this game still wins in that departmnt. (but then it all depends on what you like in a game - for me this is the king of FPS games) Basically this is a Sandbox game though you do have various missions to carry out. There are two squads one of which you control. you can play this with a friend cooperatively, you control one squad and the friend the other squad. also i do think squad based shooters never score as high as a normal FPS. I love this game and highly recommend buying it. I may buy a second copy for my son. Though I think I may already have done so (lol)

Brilliant price.

I don't usually bother about the Metascore because it only tells you how popular the game is across the whole gaming community.

For example one of the games I bought last June called Damnation, I found hard to play initially, and was also disappointed with it because the pre release videos buil;t it up to be something it wasn't. It has the lowest metascore of any of the many games I've got via Steam (only 41). My son got a copy via one of the package deals over the Christmas period and he loved it. I started playing it again with him (it's got a cooperative mode) and realized what a greqat game it was. I just think it doesn't play well initially, which is probably why a lot of people (including myself initially) were put off playing it.

I've posted images of the game somewhere. I'll set up another post later about Op Flashpoint and lik to the images when I've found them.

I'm going to be a little busy playing the latest installment in the Silent Hunter franchise. :) (A good giveaway friend has also bought it and we intend playing some cooperative as soon as we've got used to the controls. :)

Yea, the those game scores are more of guide lines. Some of the games that scored in the 70's, I have a blast playing and others suck bad, so its completely subjective to what you like to play.
I've heard to much about it to pass it up for that price and I dont see it dropping in price for another couple of years.

delores - These do work. Many of us are Steam users and Whiterabbit in particular has helped us previously with finding these free games on Steam. They do work and are free. Here is a previous post about this.
