Webroot Spysweeper - Giveaway???

Dear Mr. GAOTD,

Doom-sayers have recently entered this forum with all manner of accusation and innuendo relating to trojans, keyloggers, dwarf-like alien marsupials with fluffy ears, etc., being found in your programs and keys. Bahhhh, I break wind in their general direction, as none have bothered to supply further detail, simply stating, "WARNING, WARNING,..I don't know how yuz dunnit, but I know yuz dunnit!".

+++ Well, a scan of my machine today, by Webroot Spysweeper, caught hold of WINVESTIGATOR (a keylogging, snapshot taking, url tracking, e-mail home to mama, piece of evil wizardry). I'm not pointing the finger - Just making an observation.

Which beckoned me to ponder,..even caused me to think,.."Webroot Spysweeper! Why not try to get this great value, inexpensive, ESSENTIAL software as a GiveAway?

Sounds great except Webroot Spysweeper needs frequent updates and works on a renewable paid subscription basis like McAfee or Norton antivirus programs. This site specifies no free upgrades. Spysweeper would become obsolete quickly if subjected to the same terms as every other program, i.e. no updates. Complaints about Advanced Windows Care Pro reverting back to trial version came when people tried to upgrade that program's spyware definitions or forgot to turn off it's auto update feature.

Enough info to manually get winvestigator off your system or make sure the program you use to get rid of it finds all traces. Until it's gone at least kill those two processes on the list at the site.

G'Day M'Lady,

Hmmmm, I agree,...but was thinking in a different direction with this one - One sweep could save a lot of people a lot of trouble, I'm guessing. Let them see what is hiding on their machines, use it for a month (as you say, without updates it would quickly become redundant), then either revert to their usual freeware, or purchase the product. I figure a lot of machines would be cleaner for the exercise, and the developer gets exposure to their wares, perhaps even a few sales. I know it can't work as per the norm at GAOTD, but what's the harm in at least trying it?

That's a good point. I already use WebRoot Spy Sweeper (without the antivirus) and I think it is one of the best programs around for spyware. However I use it for free, because of msn.

windows defender has got to be one of the worst spyware apps around.

First of all it came bottom in a test to which it found 54% of spyware shown to it.

You have to have WGA also to use it.

It's a resource hog, keep clear IMHO!

Good point. You can edit for around the first 10 minutes. I wish the function remained on, with notification of how many times a post had been edited.

I use Webroot Spysweeper because it is a great product, inexpensive, does what it states it can do, and has excellent tech support. I'm not concerned with subscriptions - I just want to kill the gremlins. I don't have their anti-virus because I use Norton Security. I back up Webroot by running Ad-Aware SE (freeware) once per week. Also use Spyware Blaster (freeware).

I have tried Spybot S&D (great product), was using Spyware Terminator (nice) prior to buying Webroot, have used Arovax (pooh!) and tried countless others.

** I think it all comes down to personal choice. Sample everything until you find a configuration of tools that best suits your personal needs and computer performance, but don't go into overkill - Horses for courses, as they say. **

On performance, I have to agree with Lee - Windows Defender is a HOG. I tried it for three months when MS first obtained it - Not impressed then, and not impressed more recently when I installed it one day and uninstalled the next.

Michelle, I'm relatively new here - Seems like your brain cells are in Turbo,...MSN? Do you work for them? I'm just sticky-beakin' [smiley].

No, I'm an msn member. All msn members get to use it for free. With Mcafee Virusscan-which I don't use and the Mcafee Firewall which I don't use.
