Wow, what a quick Christmas and New Year vacation period. It only seems like yesterday that I was preparing the list of games for the Chrismast period. that's almost a month ago. I don't know whether most of you are into Steam games? Over the Christmas period virtually their whole catalogue of gameswas up for grabs with discounts from 25% right up to 80% off, and it included all of the latest releases. I've never seen such a large number of games I personally want in one area, all being discounted. Suffice it to say, it bankrupt me. I was ordering games right upto the deadline several hours ago, lol. I dread to see my next bank statement, lol. Anyway, it now back to normality and the regular daily postings of free games. I'm going to start the new year off with a really good open source clone of Worms called Wormix. I was very impressed by the game play when I installed it over the Christmas period. If you've ever played Worms you'll immediately recognise the style, though the developers had a very funny sense of humor when it came to creating avatars for the various 'worms' within the game world. :)
Wormux
I posted an abandonware version od Worms the original way back in week 3 of this project. there’s several worms games available, most are still commercial though. I have at least 3 or 4 on my shelves, but haven’t played them for quite some time. I found them the next step up from Lemmings. Similar but then totally different as well. The game is an open source project that copies the original Worms idea and updates the graphics to present day standards.
What I like about this game is that the teams are styled after the mascots of several free software projects, such as GNU, Linux, FreeBSD, KDE, GIMP, OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Thunderbird, Workrave, NuFW and SPIP.
Each player controls the team of his choice (penguin, gnu, firefox, wilber,…) and must destroy his adversary using more or less casual weapons. Full instructions on how to play the game as well as the games Wiki can be found HERE
The following is the developers introduction to the game:
War is declared !Have the mascots of your favorite free software titles battle it out in the Wormux arena using dynamite, grenades, baseball bats and other bazookas... Exterminate your opponent in a 2D environment with toon-style scenery.
Each player controls the team of his choice (penguin, gnu, firefox, wilber,...) and must destroy his adversary using more or less casual weapons.
Although a minimum of strategy is required to vanquish, Wormux is pre-eminently a "convivial mass murder" game where, turn by turn, each member of each team attempts to produce a maximum of damage to his opponents.
