My friend is going to buy a new notebook pc and anti-virus software is badly needed. Anyone knows good anti-virus software, freeware is preferred if possible.
Any good anti-virus software?

I've used Avira for the last year or so. AVG got to hoggy of my resources as did McAfee before that and I won't go near Symantec after all the problems I had years ago and hearing all the horror stories of it not letting lose.
Avira Personal is free!

Hi, hohowa, welcome to the forums!
We have discussed security software several times in these forums, just run over the threads and you'll find what you are looking for.
Another good - or even much better - source is gizmo's The Best Free Security Software for PCgraylox

As already suggested by Dragonlair - Avira Personal (freeware).
Graylox's link to Gizmo's will also attest to that but gives other security software recommendations for different types of threats.
My picks would be Avira AntiVir Personal Edition for free anti-virus
( http://www.free-av.com/en/products/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html )and for other threats Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
( http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php ).I use these for friends that turn to me for solutions...
Regards, Damian.

The free Avira is quite popular. I've used it for awhile myself with good success. You will get some false hits if the "heuristics" are turned on, but that's true with all heuristics, which try and detect new, unidentified viruses by looking for suspicious behavior. That's a good idea, but, by it's very nature, it's an inexact science. So, if someone doesn't want to put up with occasional aggravations from false hits, he/she should pay attention during the install and not enable the heuristic function.
I second the vote on the Gizmo site that Graylox mentions. It has a comment section for all it's articles and it's authors/moderators take those suggestions seriously, so there's an ongoing discussion on the latest software which helps keep the articles fresh. The authors will update them when a poster points out something new, better, or something they missed. A good site for beginners and the more experienced alike.
