And remember: "Always" do right even if you come from left field!
Addendum: Be careful with that program as many users have reported BSOD during/after the installation.
In the case of this software, it pays to know what you are doing!
And "NO" it will not fix a system already compromised by sickness.
There is no magic @ work here!
I am not going to quibble over words. I gave credit as to WHERE I got the info, like I always do.
I went to the FB account and from what I can see they are giving out ONE REG CODE.
I got TWO Different ones(one for me and one for the hubby) from the page I got them. And I had to go through a strange registration procedure. I had to give mine and his email address then I got an email from Returnil asking me to verify my email then Returnil sent me the code. It had nothing to do with your FOOT.
Also I noticed..... on Returnil's FB page at the top(Gee, It's the SAME page I referenced above in my first post.....)

Returnil has been offered on GOTD twice(maybe more), most of the people here know how to use it. When I posted this, I had only seen one report of the BSOD. I am going to bet my first born it was someone who had no idea what this program is or does.
I guess, I should have said...Use at your own risk. Believe it or not, there are people that would be better off spreading chia pet seeds on their computer. I cringe(as I am sure the Mods do) when GOTD offers registry cleaners or the like.
So, people, download or not, use at your own risk and make a Restore point, if you do. "The internets is a dangerous place."
I love Returnil. I have used it on the desktop machine (running XP) for about a year now. I do have my fair share of horror stories though. I am sure that it is responsible for at least one system melt down. I have had it running on a clean install for about 8 months now with no problems. I warn against using automated system tasks like disk defragmenting because it may accidentally corrupt certain files. If you have any concerns, there is a thread in the forums dedicated to troubles that people have encountered with Returnil and what the developers have recommended to solve these troubles. I will let the mods post the appropriate link.
I must quantify this though. All my experience is with the 2008 version. I have not upgraded to 2010 because I finally have a stable version on the XP machine. I have not tried 2010 on the Vista machine because I had a system melt down using 2008 and think that Returnil & Vista just don't like each other. That may just be my messed up thinking though.
It is an excellent tool to have in your antivirus arsenal, but I agree with Delenn; Use at your own risk. I know that it has saved me from several viruses, but also caused one or two system melt downs. I recommend doing a lot of research before you decide whether or not to use it. If you are comfortable with what you find, go ahead & use it.
I have the 2008 version. Guess I should consider upgrading. 2 thumbs up for Returnil. A simple, effective idea that pretty much works as advertised.
Frique and I participated in that thread about the proper way to defrag with Returnil, after Frique's unfortunate laptop meltdown. But I do use it on Vista and haven't run into any problems, yet, but haven't tried the suggested defrag routine, partly because I have other problems currently with defragging. I'll have to check to see if they've worked on this.
I've heard the new AV module is pretty low power, and so just offers something that you can find better elsewhere and could interfere with a full AV if you left the protection feature on.
Still, I make a point of recommending Returnil to people. I'm a big fan. Thanks folks for the heads up.
I have used all of the versions of "Returnil", since the program was first introduced several years ago. The only significant update in the program that I am aware of is that several issues back the program started being offered with a selection of using the virtual system files in RAM or on the hard disk. It is important to note that when the Returnil virtual machine uses the hard disk rather than RAM to run the system files in a virtual machine, the hard disk use in this case is not the same hard disk use that is provided with the hidden ("Z") partition. On the professional versions that I have, it is your choice of whether to use RAM or the hard disk for the virtual machine function. Using the hard drive to hold the virtual system files allows users with less than an optimal amount of RAM to still be able to use the program.
When "Returnil" first came out I thought the concept was pretty unique but I never liked the fact that I had reset my computer to get rid of all the garbage accumulated in the virtual machine. I have two programs that are superior to Returnil in that it is not necessary to reset the computer, nor do I need to defrag a petition on the hard drive (a company recommendation), with either program. The two programs I have that I feel are superior to Returnil are "Sandboxie" and Acronis "TrueImage Home". Run
"Sandboxie" works extremely well but can get very complicated when using the esoteric features. Acronis "True Image Home version 11" also works very well and is less complicated than Sandboxie. "Sandboxie" and "TrueImage Home" are superior in every way to "Returnil" for what I do using the computer. I have the registered versions of all of the above programs - none are inexpensive.
Acronis introduces several new versions of "TrueImage" a year. I believe version 11 is the first version with virtual machine capabilities. I have resisted updating my version of TrueImage after trying the thirty day trial programs of Acronis's newer versions. I have seen no advantage to the newer versions and I know all the ins and outs of version 11. My take on learning the idiosyncrasies of another program with the original program serves my intended purpose? Acronis True Image is a backup program with a value added virtual machine capability. I think there is only so much you can do to a backup program and the virtual machine feature set that comes with version 11.
The developer that produces "Sandboxie" updates his program on a regular basis. As best I can tell, the purpose of the updates is to make the "Sandboxie" program compatible with changes in other popular commercial software. There is a one time fee to register Sandboxie so there is no additional charge for the updates. Like most commercial software, Sandboxie can be downloaded and run as a trial program. After the trial period expires, the program continues to run unhampered. The registered version, as you would expect, has more features. I have never used, or felt that I needed to use, the additional functions provided in the registered version. The software was produced by a single individual who obviously puts in a great deal of time increasing the value of this program. I think that when all was said and done I ended up paying fifty dollars for the Sandboxie program - which to me is quite a bit pay for a clear conscience.
So far I am not seeing any added value in Returnil 2010 when compared with earlier versions. As I mentioned before, I think that there is only so much you can do the feature set of the virtual machine in Returnil that is designed to only protect system files.
