Katie, if you're talking about a system crash then you can use WhoCrashed to find the problem.
If it's a program crash then I'll give five things to try:
1) Check Windows Updates, install any critical and recommended updates. Does that fix your problem?
2) Try to install a program (not a giveaway, something without the wrapper) that you previously installed. If you're lucky the installer will give you an error that when fixed will resolve the issue. Installer error don't escape the GOTD wrapper but will cause the program to crash.
3) Did you update any drivers, maybe the video card? If yes, rollback to the prior driver or reinstall the older version. If no, see if there are updates available and install them. You should only update drivers if you're having trouble and you're having trouble.
4) Did you update the anti-virus, firewall or spyware engines? Not the definitions, the engines? If so, see if you can revert back to the prior engine or install an older version.
5) Make a system backup, it's going to get messy. Identify and undo the program changes to your system since the last time you successfully installed a giveaway.
Open "Programs | Uninstall a program". Sort by "Installed On" and identify the last two GOTD installations and any programs installed after the last GOTD installation. If you don't have an "Installed On" column then right-click one of the columns and check the appropriate box in the menu.
Next, open "Programs | View Installed Updates" and look for updates after the last GOTD installation.
I think you know where this is headed...
Uninstall all Updates back to the last GOTD installation. Is the problem solved?
If not, uninstall any programs back to the last GOTD installation. Problem solved?
If not, restore from the backup and hope a future Update fixes the problem.
