   Looks like GIMP has come a long way since I last tried it. Checking out the links above makes me want to try it again, but I'm not doing a lot of photo editing at the moment. (Hmm, there are all those old family photos... hope my sibs don't see this post!)

   FWIW I use the portable version, which works just fine on my hard drive, same as on a USB device. On the download page for the portable version there's also an add-on -- GIMP Photoshop Layout for GIMP Portable and Standard GIMP -- that makes it easier to use if you don't use it a lot so aren't that familiar with it.

   This portable version [don't know about the regular] takes a bit longer to load as it searches your system for fonts etc. Most of the files in the portable version have been compressed since smaller files can work better off a USB stick, but I think I made it start a little bit faster by replacing the files in GIMPPortable\ App\ gimp\... with the regular [uncompressed] files.

   maybe I shouldn't post this here as it's not about GIMP. I am only mentioning it due to my dislike as GIMPs lack of similarity to PS, or maybe the fact that I just can't get used to its tool bar! (love Photoshop).
   Anyways to those who may be looking for something similar to PS you should really try Paint.net http://www.getpaint.net/ it is of the highest quality soft that's like PS (and free)(also uses plugins), atleast for someone who uses PS on a regular basis I would recommend Paint.net. If you are looking for a scaled down PS soft then try Art Weaver, very similar but lacking the more serious tools (still great for learning PS for free, even most of the shortcuts work).
   Anyways enough of that, just thought I'd add to the conversation:). Sorry if I'm actually wasting your time.

   rrodken, no need to apologize :) Paint.net is often mentioned along with GIMP, so it's good to remind readers of it, especially since it's easier to use.

   One warning: Windows XP will be supported until the release of Paint.NET v4.0. The current version is 3.5.10.

   @Suze, using Vista (I'm one of the few who actually like it compared to XP:), but thanks for the warning anyways.

   Thanks mikiem2, when I read your last comment I was about to avoid it remembering that I had once checked out GIMPshop and didn't like it anymore then GIMP, but decided to check out your link above anyways. Portable graphic software is always a good idea! I guess I actually haven't kept up with what's going on with GIMP for a while because it looks like they have improved it a lot, and the Photoshop layout actually looks like something I would enjoy working with.
   Now off to mess around with it for a while, I am always impressed at what the freeware can do in comparison to the highly expensive soft.
