Been using CCleaner since I learned about it on this forum. It works perfectly for me. But I have a question now that I've learned it's been updated. WHY would I need to update if it's working fine as is? (Besides, the older you get the less you like change)

Thanks for tip, copmon. This update has a great custom feature I've been
hoping they would add for some time now. (del dirs)Posted 14 years ago # -

I'm with you, Senior Citizen. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" [Wherever possible. Disclaimer, disclaimer...]
Posted 14 years ago # -
If you have a problem with a new version coming out - "If it ain't broke", then don't update your version. Nobody is forcing you to install the new version - but reading through the change history, you can see that there are a number of improvements, support for new versions of browsers etc, bug fixes, performance improvements (where it could be sped up), and introduction of new features.
So it's not just a case of "if it ain't broke" because software like this has to support other software and operating systems - and technology waits for nobody.
If the "if it ain't broke" stood true for computer software and technology in general - we would all still be using card punch, reel to reel tape, listenting to our music on 78RPM records, and black and white television would do just fine, thank you very much.

Not to mention that if you use the filehippo download link, you can download previous versions all the way back to CCleaner 2.00.491 Beta 2 without even hitting the 'more...' link if you wanna feel retro.
don't forget still using KodaChrome, and hard drives with 18 inch removable platter packs.
Anybody want an S-100 8-bit multiuser time-sharing system with a 20 meg 8" Fujitsu hard drive?
Pre-flashcube flashbulbs? I have a pack of those...

Got it yesterday.. they send me emails when new versions are out.
Posted 14 years ago # -
Thanks for the info graylox. after avoiding using CCleaner for several years (it wiped one of my HDD's totally and I lost a lot of valuable data) I decided to download it the other day. Still not sure about it yet, but will keep a close eye on it. i've come to the conclusion that it must have been an error on my part that caused the loss. :(
Posted 14 years ago # -
Sorry for your mishap Whiterabbit but it was definitely some error on your part coz CC is indeed a very reliable SW. In any case you could've salvaged the lost data with one of the many Apps that GAOTD (or other sites) offered over the years.
Graylox, do you know if this latest version of CC still requires that you close the Web Browser if you wanna clean the cache?Posted 14 years ago # -
Hi, Purrete, yes I was asked to close Firefox, don't know about other browsers.
And you are right, CC is a very stable and reliable tool; nevertheless, you should never use such tools with your eyes closed.

http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/PC_Cleanup >> CCleaner >> The following items should not be checked.
"Memory Dumps"
"Windows Log Files"
"Old Prefetch Data"
"Hotfix Uninstallers"
The Old Prefetch Data cleaning option will decrease your system performance.if you don't know don't click it.

Does anyone on this thread work for Piriform? I can never understand why people feel the need to start a thread just to say that a new version has been released. Why does CCleaner need special treatment, especially since it's not particularly comprehensive in what it does?
Posted 13 years ago # -
"it's not particularly comprehensive in what it does?"
I've spent a lot of time looking at and reviewing file cleaner type programs - and there is always someone who likes to point out that something else will delete more, like someone who's hands are never clean enough... Out, damned spot! out, I say!
It may certainly be considered by some to be too conservative in that there may be other tools that delete more files. But it is this conservative design that tends to err on the side of safety - (by default) deleting data from fairly well understood areas.
I believe it is successful because it is easy to use, fast to run, regularly updated, and makes what could be a fairly boring and time consuming task of cleaning out folders and caches into a one click task so easy even my parents can manage it.
This last point is significant - users feel they are cleaning their computer - even though free disk space probably isn't an issue. (It's a nice to have a clean feeling).
It is not a bad tool... in fact it is an excellent tool for what it does. Quick, General purpose, conservative, file cleaning for the masses. If you look deeper there is a lot more to CCleaner - but for most users, what comes out of the box by default is all they need.
If you need something "particularly comprehensive" then you have a wide choice available, but at the end of the day, trying to keep a system 100% "clean" is impossible (Windows, most apps, and internet browsers are just "messy" by design often leaving traces everywhere) - but for these people having a "clean" system without non-critical files being present on any hard disk - is a crusade they would devote their lives to, and again face defeat only seconds after having a "perfect, clean system".

I use 8 clean-up programs that I have tested and trust, and it doesn't matter in what order you run them, the others always pick up more items.
You still haven't answered my question as to why CCleaner needs to be singled out simply because a new release has arrived.
Posted 13 years ago # -
Why not?
Many of our users trust this programme; we have recommended it often, especially to inexperienced users, at least they should be aware that this tool is updated, as an update may be important for better security.
When you need to learn more about "cleaner tools" look at gizmo's recommendations (e.g.):
Best Free File Cleaner
Updates of other programmes have been posted too in these forums.
It depends on the interests of our users.
You are welcome, to review other free or open-source programmes, when you think they are worth a special recommendation. Just open a topic under: Good software we need to know aboutWe are always thankful for any helpful comment.

I don't think CCleaner was deliberately singled out. Just nobody has wanted to create a topic to discuss others. I don't have a problem with this topic any more than I have a problem with the "Word Association Game" which has been running for 3 years.
If this topic (or ccleaner in general) upsets you - avoid the stress and don't open this topic.
Posted 13 years ago # -
Why? I'm agree with BuBBy and graylox on this one. Why not? Thanks copmom? I updated my copy.
SpodoCommodo, which clean-up program would you recommend? I don't want to run eight, but it sounds like you have tested them all and I would be interested in which one you think is best. It needs to be safe like CCleaner for the reasons BuBBy mentioned and of course it needs to be free like CCleaner.

CCleaner is a freeware gem that gets better all time.
So it's definitely worth mentioning updates.Btw I stumbled upon CCEnhancer ( a small tool which adds support for over 270 new programs into CCleaner).Anyone familiar with it?
I'm sure no one would mind if people talked about their own favorite freeware programs in a separate topic. In fact this might prove to be very interesting to all.
Posted 13 years ago # -
Yes Robert I did try CCEnhancer it ok but not find a lot on my PC & now I gone to new will not get as only like .NET Framwork 1 & 2 will not fit bad .NET 3 & 3.5 or 4.
as for CCleaner updates not need as it come out every 4 weeks if you miss a update your PC will still go ok.Posted 13 years ago # -

Since I don't allow programs access to check for auto updates, I'm glad to see this thread as a reminder. I could get the Piriform email notification and I have checked and gotten updates manually, but I learn more from the discussions here in this thread (and about lots of programs and games in others).
As someone who's more of a novice level user, using CCleaner in tandem with Revo uninstaller (and Dell PC Tuneup) is a SAFE way to keep my hard drives and registries clean...without utterly destroying them, lol. AVG Security (2011) now comes with a "PC Analyzer" and it has found about a 100 new registry items that it wants to clean which don't match up with anything in CCL or Dell PC-TUp. While trust AVG for security, I'm not cleaning them (for now). No way.
