Grid Cartographer
June 5th, 2013
On Monday I released my first commercial tool software for PC - Grid Cartographer. It's available in a free edition and extra features can be unlocked for a small fee when you upgrade to the Pro edition.
Grid Cartographer is an assistant program for making maps for classic tile based RPGs like the early Wizardry and Might & Magic games, amongst many others. The idea is you run the game in a window, side by side with Grid Cartographer and you tab back and forth between the two building up the map as you go along using the mouse to draw the wall edges, special floor areas and various doorways.
I developed this first as a tool for my own uses, specifically for mapping out Wizardry 6. I think this approach of "dog fooding" is generally the best way to get a good product. Especially one where you're trying to make it as helpful as possible. If I had just guessed at what was needed it could easily have been far less useful. As it stands the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with some great suggestions from an enthusiastic group of supporters.
I think everyone understands this is a niche tool and in discussion with a friend he pointed out you'd definitely know instantly whether you'd actually need it or not. That's fine with me - I think although the market is limited that's no reason not to develop something that does a great job. I hope I've achieved that.
Development progress has been going well with several patches being released so far. You can read up on how the project has developed over the short time it has been available here on the forum. If you have suggestions then please don't hesitate to contact me through there, or via my contact page.
I had a lot of fun making this. Thanks to everyone for the support!
