i have had several computers and windows systems
i always disable or remove internet explorer
only in the last few month have i had problems with the not able to connect error message .....shortly after the gcd file began to show up
i will miss reading about your games and trying them out but internet explorer and all it's problems will not be a part of my system
internet explorer ; the gcd file; and the loading of the games

Suit yourself, but a file that's not used just takes up space. I use Firefox, but IE is on my system & working, both for the GOTD offers & other apps that use one or more of its files. I haven't had or noticed any problems because of it, but then like I said, it's just sitting there, with some of it's files used occasionally.

The sad thing rlhollow is that no one here gives a ----. I have commented on problems with the installation (mainly due to the gcd file I believe) but no one here really cares as long as everything works for them. You see this is only a forum for "members" not the Admin.
I did love this site at one time, but truth be told they are trying to get better software (ie the addition of the gcd file) and I hope they do, but so far it may actually be worse (SoundFrost).
Just move on to better sites and keep checking in to see any quality software or developer (ie Aha-Soft) who realize and offer serials instead of the dreaded gcd file, or in your case sorry but I guess your ---- out of luck!Posted 11 years ago # -

I respectfully disagree... You can find many, many threads where folks have gone out of their way, on their own time, very often without any thanks, to try to help in any way that they can. rlhollow believes that Internet Explorer is a bad thing to have installed -- by far the majority of Windows users don't share that view, & according to some 3rd party testing it may be the most secure out of the 4 major browsers, but everyone's free to form their own opinions. The GOTD team uses a software wrapper of sorts to enforce what's been the original concept since day one, that any offers last only 24 hours, & that wrapper requires Internet Explorer to be installed & working -- that was true with the old wrapper as well as the new & noted several places, for example the FAQ. Choosing to remove or not install Internet Explorer is an individual choice that has consequences -- 'bout all anyone can do is remind rlhollow of that.
You see this is only a forum for "members" not the Admin.
If you want the GOTD team's ear so-to-speak, perhaps try posting comments to the GOTD blog. While it sounds nice when/if the folks running things have one of their own participate in their forums, it's more rare than not as that costs money [you have to pay someone that could be doing something else] & frankly, in my experience at or with forums where the company has a presence, it has very limited benefits... the company's rep is often used as a scapegoat & target it seems for any reason at all -- I mean if someone's in a nasty mood because for whatever reason they didn't do the laundry, they'll pick a topic just so they can vent at the company rep.
I did love this site at one time, but truth be told they are trying to get better software (ie the addition of the gcd file) and I hope they do, but so far it may actually be worse (SoundFrost).
Time will tell if the new wrapper will mean better offers, but don't forget that it also stopped things from getting further out of hand, which might have resulted in the site closing down eventually -- when bypassing the intent of the wrapper gets so common that there are apps to automate the process, the wrapper may as well be nonexistent, & without that who knows? Moving to the new wrapper had costs, & the GOTD team logically would not have implemented it if they felt that they had a choice. That said, while the team has gone out of their way to make sure AV software didn't block the new wrapper, they can't control what brand of AV apps you install & use, & some AV software companies do take the approach that detecting lots & lots of false positives makes their customers think they're doing a great job... one of those examples where selling a bug as a feature actually can work.
RE: Soundfrost, I haven't seen anywhere that an AV scan found a virus or similar in any of the app's file. I haven't seen bad Soundfrost reviews elsewhere. I haven't seen soundfrost.org blacklisted, or reports of the site doing something bad [last time I checked (last night) McAfee Site Advisor still hadn't found anything bad about the site]. If being clairvoyant is now one of the requirements for hosting downloads, I expect every site offering them will be gone Very soon. :)

Well said Mikiem.
As for SoundFrost. I'm still not sure whether it was the cause of the problems I and others have been experiencing. Things did start to go pear shaped after installing Sound Frost. I've not installed any other software since apart from a Steam game, but that was after the problems started. That said. Every day the giveaway site gets fifty thousand plus downloads. If SoundFrost had been the cause I'm sure there would have been a lot more complaints from the commnuity. As it is only several out of all those that downloaded and most probably installed it did post experiences/complaints. That's only 0.014% of the community; hardly significant at all.
Mikien is right about I.E. I've stopped using it since installing Win 8. But because I know its required for giveaway activation I'm happy to keep it in the background. With today's massive hard drives (I've got a modest 8TB on my system) the amount of space I.E. takes up, is even more insignificant than the percentage of those who appear to have had problems with SoundFrost.
As for the gcd file, it was inevitable that it would be introduced. Sadly peoples greed (yes greed at wanting to be able to install the giveaway at any time instead of accepting the 24hr limit or having to pay for the program at a later date once they had reinstalled windows or purchased a new computer) and as Mikiem points out, apps to extract the goodies so that the programs could be installed anytime and even loads of You Tube videos telling you how to do it manually became available, the giveaway project would have been doomed. What developer in their right mind was going to give their products away when they knew it was probably going to be ripped off and found on all of the popular peer to peer sites within minutes of being available on the site. Not many I bet.
If you choose not to download programs from this site, that's your choice. I very much doubt (apart from maybe BitsDuJour) you are going to find a safer environment and as good a choice of tested applications and games elsewhere as you get from this brilliant giveaway project. (BDJ don't offer games, nor do they offer free applications every day)

WOW! Really? Anyways @rlhollow you need IE for this site. If you say anything negative you may very well get comments such as the latter! (HaHa).
As I said before I did love this site I just wish they would actually fix their problems instead of creating more (IMHO).
Now if anyone wants to make this a big problem feel free to do so!To those who have commented I do respect the fact that you spend more time helping here than you get credit for! Words on screen and type just don't get across as one would wish they would! Don't stop helping with this site, it would be lost without you!
