Don't think or see how it would effect anything -- here's what data I have...
Installing Earth Animated Wallpaper version 1.0 adds the folder Earth Animated Wallpaper, with 3 files, 2 of them uninstall related. Registry entries are for the most part all junk, e.g. MuiCache... the only maybe exception [still feel it's junk since I haven't seen this sort of key effect anything] I recorded was [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\4917\Shell\{5C4F28B5-F869-4E84-8E60-F11DB97C5CC7}]
Microsoft tells how you can delete & restore the ShellBags keys here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813711
This link while focused on forensics does talk about them, what data they store etc.

I'd run a hard drive diagnostic if I were you. The correlation to the wallpaper sounds purely coincidental. However, corrupted system files are often a sign of an imminent drive failure. If nothing else, check the "Reallocated Sector Count" in the drive's SMART data.
If the drive is OK then running SFC should fix the issue.
