for the past week or so, i have been unable to activate any software because it keeps giving me the failed to connect message. I have always been able to activate the software, but now it has just stopped working. my firewall is off, and i am not offline either. and it is not mcafee because i checked the log. what is going on????? im worried that there is going to be a piece of software that i actually want within the next few days.

Is your date and time set correctly?
Posted 17 years ago # -
Right now, I'd be more concerned about leaving that firewall off than missing out on a good piece of software. Unless you have physically told your security program to block this site, that will not be the issue. Step 1: Turn it back on (and don't you ever turn it off again, or I'll jump through your monitor and deflate that bball), ...Step 2: Try Bill's advice.

and my time and date is set correctly.

Oh you want to make this difficult, eh bballchicklet? ;)
Posted 17 years ago # -
Good Chicklet!
Have you made any security setting changes over the past week or so - to Windows, your firewall or web browser? Which browser are you using? That may save Wild Bill and others asking - Sorry, gotta go, I'm screaming tired and beginning to cry...!!
Who put that rubbish url in my last post? What IS that?
Posted 17 years ago # -
i haven't changed anything in my security settings
i'm using firefox.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Well Firefox works just fine here under the right settings. How about trying IE and seeing if that works? Then we can help getting Firefox working right. Just a thought.
Posted 17 years ago # -
i just set IE as my default browser and it still isn't working. The dialog comes up just a second or so after I run the activation file.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Well I can't sleep (3 days and counting), so please bare with the nutty questions...
1) You're on a home PC, not networked?
2) When you were able to activate programs on-line with Firefox, did you receive activation confirmation in Firefox, or did that page open in IE?It would also be useful to hear from the moderators or site admin to know whether this type of problem has been reported previously.

By the way Wolven... you are doing great for being up for 3 days! Heck you are doing great even if you just woke up after a good nights rest just 2 hours ago after a few cups of coffee. :)
Posted 17 years ago # -
I am on a network, but I can activate on every other computer on it.
The page usually opens in firefox.BTW thanks for all the help, I really appreciate the effort.

Wolven, I can sympathise with days of no sleep. I do the same (not through choice - ie. mania) It's reassuring to know you cannot die directly because of lack of sleep (although driving isn't a good idea).
Back on topic - make sure you change default browser through "Set Program Access and Defaults" or
%SystemRoot%\system32\control.exe appwiz.cpl,,3
If you don't have a link to it.
What is the "correct date and time" from the viewpoint of GOTD. Don't forget that they are seeing dates and times all over the place. Depending on where you are sitting - everyone else is either yesterday, today or tomorrow (and everywhere inbetween).
Just to rule this "system date and time" theory - a little later I'll activate todays giveaway - but back in 1997 or something - see if it makes any difference.
Posted 17 years ago # -
That's how I did it.
Posted 17 years ago # -
But all of the easy ideas are gone bballchicklet. :(
Can you:
ping -a http://www.giveawayoftheday.com
Or to any other computer on the network?
Does IPCONFIG look okay (run from the Win+R and typing CMD, like ping)? Compare to the other computers. Each IP address from each computer will be a little different of course.

OK - for the record - the local system date and time means absolute squat when it comes to activation. I just activated both of todays giveaways - after first travelling back to October 1997. Not a problem. (I had to use chronograph to get back - The DeLorean is at the garage.)
Same as http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/633?replies=3#post-3113

bballchicklet - if you can see and post in these forums, the problem likely isn't your connectivity to http://www.giveawayoftheday.com
Posted 17 years ago # -
Thanks BuBBy for checking on this. But someone once mentioned that they couldn't activate when the date on the computer was passed the day of the giveaway, not before. I never tried it myself, I just had taken their word for it. :o
Posted 17 years ago # -
I just pinged and it worked fine. As soon as a run the .exe it comes up with that response. It doesn't seem to even try to connect.

Here in Australia, we beta test each day before most of the rest of the world gets to install. So while everyone else is running Wednesday 14th - we have already upgraded to Thursday 15th.
(I guess if you find any bugs in your day - it's probably our fault).
My point - every day we install a giveaway passed the "day of the giveaway".

I don't know BuBBy? I have seen some limited connectivity act really weird. Some ports would work while some others wouldn't. Usually running IPCONFIG will expose it though. At least for me it usually does. And if not all of the time, it was faulty hardware. The last time it happened, I had limited connectivity from wireless (card or USB) and Ethernet, but dialup and HomePNA (USB) worked just fine.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Well BuBBy, you can be one day ahead because you use your time zone, right? Because by GMT, you are not late. At least that makes sense to me.
Posted 17 years ago # -
bballchicklet, does IPCONFIG show everything is fine? Check with another computer if you don't know what is supposed to be there. The IP Address will be a bit different on another computer on the network, but everything else should be the same.

Another possibility could be the download manager - Some of those gremlins have a habit of corrupting files...Just to come at it from a different angle.
Sorry guys. I laughed at your 'sleep' comments, then woke up 15 minutes later with the keyboard stuck to the side of my face.
BuBBy - Can you write a program to make it rain,...PLEASE!!
Posted 17 years ago # -
IPCONFIG is just fine. And I also tried not using a dl manager. Also, I don't think it is the files that are corrupt because this is happening every day.
Posted 17 years ago # -
@ Wolven - Where are you, we need rain too - I might have some trouble localising the program though.
bballchicklet - I can guess the answer, but just to clarify - you are downloading the program once - then running it on multiple pcs - as opposed to doing multiple downloads?
Posted 17 years ago # -
BuBBy - South-East corner of 'our little island home'.
I can guess the answer, but just to clarify - you are downloading the program once - then running it on multiple pcs - as opposed to doing multiple downloads?
.Whaahaahaaaa,..we missed that one, Bill!
Nice catch, Guru.
Posted 17 years ago # -
I'm doing multiple downloads.
