Thanks, HappyPerson... I use CCleaner (and others) but have learned (the hard way, like the blogger) to be extremely careful with them. You just can't trust cleaners to pick and choose what you need and what you don't these days, and I never run a registry cleaner anymore. I've removed one or two registry files just to get entirely rid of a program, but that's it. You really have to go over those check-boxes one by one that the cleaning programs display, and save the deep-cleaning for the rug! Kind of defeats their purpose, but at least it puts the files in a list and lets you choose.
While no program is perfect, the problems caused to that blogger is more likely the result of some other program than CCleaner.
I'd tend to agree, Ashraf... I was on a cleaning "spree" with several different cleaners (registry and all) when I ran into the problem where my hard drive was "gone." (Luckily I have a geek friend who lives nearby...) But I think CCleaner is the one I worry least about. Glary Utilities is also not very invasive, and was recommended to me by a Microsoft chat person for another problem. I tend to stick to those two and Advanced System Care when I get into a spring-cleaning mode.
Last time I used CCleaner, (about 4 years ago), it wiped a whole hard drive of mine (there were three hard drives on the computer), and I lost valuable data that I'd not backed up yet. (There was over 200Gb of data lost). To this day I have never been able to work out exactly what happened, but I do think it was probably my own fault. A friend of mine had a similar experience with it, though not to the same extent. Ive been wary of such programs ever since. When it cmes to cleaning I either do it the long way around (manually), or make sure any important data is backed up then do a format to purge the system of all the rubbish it's accumulated.
I download a lot of stuff virtually every day, so it doesn't take long to fill my hard drives.
I'm sure CCleaner has come a long way since I last used it, but I'll always be wary of uing such programs as there's always another way. :)

CCleaner includes a complete backup option, so in the rare event you remove something that you later need - you will have a backup to restore from.
Whoa, wrabbit... reformatting your drive to clean up? Talk about drastic measures! Lol, but I'm sure it works great if you're all backed up. That's my problem... is backing up my whole hard drive. The problem being, I'm not sure how to do it! I guess you need an outside drive? Otherwise, you'd be doubling up what you already have. (which is lots and lots o' games)
And that's good to know, Pookie... I'm not sure if I use that or not! But I believe it does set a restore point. It seems really strange that a cleaner is capable of wiping out a hard drive... unless you're dealing with the registry? But those programs should know better! *&:-b
Hi midori,
It no longer seems drastic to me as I've done it so often.
As for the back up option at the time of the problem there was no way the 200Gb of lost programs, games etc could have been backed up; because apart from that particular drive that was wiped either of the other two drives would have been big enough to back up the loss. I purchased a couple of recovery programs in response to this loss, neither of which were able to recover anything from the damage CCleaner had done.
I have about 3.75Terabytes of external storage now, most of it full, (due to all the rubbish I download daily) lol. I'll be needing a new external soon.
I'm not messing with the registry either! I'm using Revo uninstaller to take care of deleting entries in the registry when I'm removing a program and that helps with that, but as I mentioned in another topic, I did lose my entire F: drive .. someone suggested I picked up a virus. Well that was my back up, so bought a new 320GB HD, (the C: is 145), and used Acronis True Image to duplicate my C: drive, then switched the connections and made the new one the C: drive.. all working fine and still have my backup HD.
After I finish playing one of my HO games, I'm using Revo to totally remove them, no point keeping what I've successfully finished.
I have one drive, C, and plop! that's it. I sure have admiration for those of you w/ multiples, and backups, and the knowledge thereof. I guess I'm happy with simplicity!
I agree, copmom... I love that Revo Uninstaller. It takes you directly to any left-over files in the registry, marks them in bold, and then tells you (in bold letters!) to check before you delete. Nice. :)
I've never had any problems with CCleaner. I have posted this over at the forum to see if anything is happening.
Upon reading the response in that link, and as someone else pointed it out to me, it now says that if was the fault of Nicholas Mead and not CCleaner itself.

@just4onec0mment THANK YOU! You have saved my laptop. The Alt+F10 PQSERVICE trick worked! It launched the Acer into a “hidden” recovery utility which reinstalled Windows XP from scratch without even the need for an XP CD :) After 4 years of owning an Acer, I can’t believe I never knew about this. One thing - is it possible to recover any of my files or has the recovery utility wiped the entire hard drive with a clean install of XP?
@Kevin and @Lewis I did concede in my post that the problem may have been caused by something that I uninstalled and that it is “possible I accidentally removed something related to the session manager.” I simply can’t be sure what caused the problem because I did so much cleaning in one go which maybe goes to prove that, for big clean up jobs, it’s best to use CCleaner one step at a time i.e. uninstall programs and then restart, clean the registry and then restart etc.""
Maybe he should delete his post and stop causing untold stress to others.
Thanks, Tiffany... Lol! So easy to blame software instead of yourself, eh? Well if anything, it reminded us to exercise caution when using any kind of drive cleaner. :)
with the Power off at the back of the PC Push the on Button with the power still off may help, or try in to safe mode at boot most PC is F8 no Acer. it will tell at boot the key to press Pick system restore with command Prompt need Administrator account,At the commard Prompt,Type,

and don't clean all may do in P C you need to know if it kill log in or hotfix service pack like if you fit sp3 it take off the backup no good if you need keep 30days min to be safe. ccleaner is one of the better ones.
Hi tiffany, if you've not used a delte process that shreds the removed files it should be possible to recover them using one of many recovery programs. We've been given a few via the giveaway project. The ones I purchasedto try to recover my lost data didn't work, but I think that was because CCleanr did too good a job with the removal of the files.
I couldn't recommend any one file restorer; though what i'd recommend is getting demos of various ones and see if they work. I'm sure thereae freeware ones as well. If you can find one of the ones given away you'll probably find lots of free alternatives quoted by community members.
Sorry to be so diffuse in my advice; though i hope it is of help.

Thanks Hotdoge3 and WR, it wasn't me who had the problem. It was the original poster from another link who did.
