I personally haven't tried it. So if you try it, let us know if it is any good. As I love Smart Type Assistant myself and I don't want to give it up.
As far as reactivation... the best and legal way was to make backups of your hard drive. But you knew that right? But in the future, if you save the Setup file (some GAOTD combine activation and setup in one and will prevent the setup part from installing) you can use it later for after a hard drive crash.
You also need to make a backup copy of your registry for just in case. ERUNT (freeware) will do this very well. And you save both for later and you can reactivate them. Restore with ERUNT (works only on NT, 2000, and XP and maybe Vista) first before running the setups.
