Here’s Wednesdays 5th Augusts games. I went over the top a little posting several games. I actually had several more, but thought I'd better save them for another day. You'll find a whole range of different genres from Breakout/Pinball to RPG games in this little bundle. There's a game that sees you maneuvering a basket down into caves (not the one that Wizzard posted the other week, and a tower building puzzle as well as a good looking skiing game. If you like (or liked) the old marvel classics you'll also get the chance to play a few of the characters from those comics. :)

Icy Tower: (5.26Mb)
Though it lacks complex game play or a detailed plot, Icy Tower is a carefree way to kill some time. Your goal is simple, but trickier than it sounds: to advance your character as far up the icy tower as possible without falling or being knocked off-screen. You ll be able to jump higher if you run faster, but you must take care not to slip off the platforms into the abyss. The game takes a rather humorous approach, with cartoon-style graphics that let you play as a hip-hop kid or a disco dude in a leisure suit. Although the demo version appears to disable a few of the game s more advanced features, you can still adjust the volume and reconfigure the controls to suit your taste. Icy Tower won t keep many folks on the edge of their seat, but it s likely to provide a few laughs.
Developers description:
Harold the Homeboy has decided to climb a huge tower he found the other day. It's up to you to help him get as high as possible without falling down, and collect extra points by doing cool moves on the way. Icy Tower is a fun and short, yet addictive game, where your only goal is to gain as many points as possible. The best way is to climb really high and make combo jumps on the way. The game brings you custom characters, un-lockable floor types, replays to share with your friends, and lots of combo rewards

Cavern Klamrisk: (<1Mb)
A short but fun 3D arcade game. Go down a very deep cavern.
In this game you have to steer a basket with a ragdoll into a cavern, as deep as possible to get a new record (my record was 764 m). You can also get a record for most damage (falling stones, hitting the walls, etc). It’s only a short game, but another one I liked playing, so I thought worth posting. I’m not sure whether the Caiman and the author’s versions are the same. The authors version was smaller and called the party version.

ORF Ski Challenge: (51.4Mb)
Although the main part of this game is online; there’s a decent practice section with fairly realistic skiing and decent graphics. It’s nearly as good as my Torino 2006 Winter Olympics game, though it only has the downhill Slalom to play. Apparently there’s a new version issued every year with prises to be won for the winners of a online competition. Unfortunately this years competition has passed, but I still think this is a game worth looking into. Even if you only play the practice game you’ll get some enjoyment out of it. I’ve never seen a better freeware skiing game. There are some in game adverts with this game; usually at the menu stages.
Here's what the developer says:
ORF-Ski Challenge 2009 is a free online ski simulator in which you can slide down different snowy slopes in various weather conditions and with diverse levels of difficulty, something that makes the game enjoyable for players of any age. You can also customize the skiers appearance and adjust your skiing style to suit your own.
The game includes two main modes, training and online races. The first one can be played offline for as long as you want, while the latter requires an Internet connection and a free user account – which you can create within the game itself in two easy steps. Races require a qualifying session and follow a strict schedule, meaning you can't race any time you want but only when there's actually an event in the game's calendar.
The graphics in ORF-Ski Challenge 2009 are not extraordinary, but quite decent if we bear in mind that the game doesn't have very high system resources. At least they're good enough to provide a realistic speed sensation. The music though ends up being too repetitive and somehow spoils the game.

Ploing: (4.7Mb)
I loved this game when I first discovered it a few years ago. It was a refreshing change from the usual arkanoid games. This one is slightly different though as it is a cross between a breakout and a pinball game.
I was looking for some feeware breakout games because I'd just about bought all there was to find at the time (Well ones that I thought were worth buying). I found quite a few (some of which I've still to post) that were nearly as good as some of the commercial games I'd bought and i'd count this one amongst them. don't confuse it with another freeware breakout that I've already posted called Poing; which is also a very good breakout game with a difference.
It's only a short game with 16 levels (plus an extra one which can be downloaded fro the same page as the main game), but I think you'll find them challenging enough for you to get more than a few hours of enjoyment out of it. The graphics may be a little dated now as it's several years old. There's several screenshots on the download page
There's a commercial version called Ploing 2 with upgraded graphics, additional modes and lots more levels.

Fanta Scape:
This wonderful game has many options and possibilities. You start with a small team of three characters (a fighter, a cleric and a wizard). Your task is to destroy all the enemies on an island. To fight you can use your fighter and/or your wizard and you can heal them with your cleric (note: the cleric can also heal herself).
There are 4 worlds to choose from: Island (easy), Plain (normal), Desert (hard) and Ruines (super hard). In each world you can play of number of levels. You can replay a level too, even if you completed that one before. You can do that to train new fighters or to earn more experience points or gold. Don't worry, even replaying a level is not boring, because each time you start a level it is another one (random created levels). In a few case it is possible that you cannot complete a level because the island are divided into several parts and you cannot reach all the enemies, but that's not a problem, just restart that level (in meanwhile you have extra points and gold).
After completing (or cancelling) a level you can upgrade your characters and/or recrute some new ones.
* To update a character:
After playing a character will have some experience points (exp), so you can upgrade your character by clicking on "LvUp" (Level Up). With a higher level your character will be stronger (more Heal points (Hp) and more fightpower (Mp)).
Or if you want to upgrade your character to another kind, you can click on ClassCng (Change Class). At this manner you can eg. change your fighter into a ninja, a knight or another man. Or your cleric into a witch, a scout or another woman.* To recruit a character:
Click on Advertisement (cost 50 gold) and wait a bit. The people will be able to see a poster and if they are interessed, you will be able to recrute one or more fighters (men) and/or archers (women). If you really want them, don't forget to click on Employ. This costs some gold, but now you enlarged your army. The best way to upgrade your new soldier is to play an easy level to earn some experience points. After that you can upgrade your new soldier or change it into another kind of fighter, sorceress or whatever.
Controls:
Everything works with the mouse and is menu driven. The menu's are in English so there is no problem.
- To select a character, click on it.
- To let him/her move left or right click on the spot where he or she has to go.
- To fight (to heal, etc..) just right click on the enemie (or on your friend in case of healing).
- note: You can let one or more charcters follow another character. eg. Let your cleric heal the wizard, just click on the wizard and everywhere the wizard will go, the cleric will follow him and heal him automatically if necessary. Only remember that she will forget that task while they are sitting by a campfire.
Views:
While playing a level you can switch over to a 3D screen. The game will continue and it is very nice to see it, but you are not able to select your characters anymore, so the 3D screen is only present for the show. You can only fight and move in the 2D screen.
