Every time I try to connect with setup I get the try again box.
I have Windows XP Pro on a dell XPS desktop. I use Firefox3.5 and IE8. I have another dell with XP on the same router and I have no problem connecting. I've tried every suggestion I could find, I even tried Safe Mode
and could not connect to 66.29.17.89:80 any suggestions?

66.29.17.89:80 doesn't seem like a valid address to me. That might be why you can't connect to it. 208.88.224.199:80 is the address for GAOTD and the activation system.

jerryh: Say, are you trying to access your router or something? I remember that local Ethernet addresses are usually in the 64.*.*.* range, though 66.*.*.* is sorta close. Where'd you get the IP address from anyways? If you can access the forums, surely you can access the activation server (it's hosted on the same site).

GMMan, I got the address from:
It seems the activation IP address is different from the domain IP address. I can download the RAR file from the domain but when I click setup.exe I get a pop-up that says setup "failed to connect. please try again later". I can't connect to site that validates the setup.exe. I have two dell computers connected to the same router side by side one connects and validates and I can install the software the other cannot. This has been happening for many weeks. If they are both the same IP address how is it that I can connect to download but not validate?
hotdoge, I got the IP address from the forum. I don't know actually know the IP address of the setup.exe I just copied it from the post.Posted 15 years ago # -
Well, I know for a fact that the forums, main site, and activation system (which is hosted under the main site under the WordPress blogging software) are on the same server. If your computer can connect to GAOTD and not give an error, then you can more than likely connect to the activation system. If you can't, could be a configuration problem or a malware infestation. Which computer are you using right now to connect to the forums?
Just for the record, Giveaways are always delivered in ZIP files, not RAR.

GMMan, I am writing on the same computer that can't activate the software.
That is the the problem. I can access GAOTD, but when I click setup.exe I get the pop-up "failed to connect".Now that I know it's the same IP address for activation I am at a loss as to what to do. Scans show no malware or viruses. As I stated before I even tried accessing in safe mode to avoid any program conflicts or problems, but that didn't work ether.
Is it possible the GAOTD sight is rejecting my IP address. Thanks

Try looking your hosts file. I thinks it's in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\etc. There should be a file with a generic icon and no extension there named hosts. Open it up with wordpad or something and check if there's anything but a bunch of explanations and 127.0.0.1 localhost. If there is, delete everything except for the explanations and the 127.0.0.1 line. Don't forget to make a backup. Save and restart your computer, then try again.
Is it possible that GAOTD is rejecting your IP? No, if you can see the main site and post on this forum.

GMMan My Host file has hundreds of restrictions inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy and Safer Networking Limited. There are also five backups of the host file in the folder. This is a read only file so I don't know how to edit it. I am new at host list removal.
I think you are on to the problem because my other computer has no list at all.
Thanks again

Spybot - Search & Destroy protects the host files. I had to reinstall Spybot so I could edit the host file and removed all (10,000+) sights. I restarted the computer tried setup.exe with the same result could not access the site.

Try uninstalling Spybot, upload a copy of your hosts, and check your firewall. What firewall are you using? Also, have you had any other problems using programs that connect to the Internet or trying to browse some sites? And I'm somewhat suspicious of 66.29.17.89:80. How did you get the IP in the first place?
Posted 15 years ago # -
I uninstalled spybot.
I uploaded my hosts
I use Comodo firewall. I have no trouble browsing I use firefox 3.5 IE8 and Opera9 all with no issues.
66.29.17.89:80 I just copied from a forum post I have no idea where they got it.

Where'd you put the hosts? I get see it if it's not posted here or if you don't post a link to it :)
Comodo, eh? What level is it set at? Also, go to the main window, click FIREWALL -> Advanced -> Network Security Policy. Check if any GAOTD wrappers (Setup.exe and Activate.exe) are blocked. Remove those rules if so. Also, do a Purge. It might help clear other things up a bit.
Do you also have Defense+ on? That thing to me is really annoying. If you have it on, disable it for now after you clean up the firewall and try again.

I didn't upload hosts I just deleted them. Comodo is set to Safe level. Defense+ is off. I did a Purge and didn't see any Setup.exe blocked but I removed every entry with Setup.exe.
I disabled Comodo tried the setup.exe and I got through. It WORKED!
I have two other computers set up with Comodo with Defense+ off and level set to Safe, they both download with no problem. That is why I never thought of Comodo.
When I switch back to Safe level GAOTD is blocked again. Obviously some setting in Comodo need to be changed on this computer. Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Ahh... We take a loop around and we come back to the firewall. Classic.
Next steps:
-Check out the Firewall Events to see if there is anything related to Setup.exe or Activate.exe. Look for the key symbol at the side and see if anything's blocked.
-Check your blocked Network Zones, there might be some addresses inside. Unless you have any specific reasons for those, you can probably delete them.
-Check your Network Security Policy again, deleting anything that is not commonly used or shouldn't have access to the Internet.
-Be sure to allow any Setup.exe or Activate.exe with the key icon so that the wrapper can connect. Also click Remember my Answer (or something, it's that box on the bottom of the alert).Posted 15 years ago # -
-Check out the Firewall Events... nothing related to Setup.exe.
-Check your blocked Network Zones... empty.
-Check your Network Security Policy... all items with Setup.exe are with a line like:C:DOCUME~1\Jerry\LOCALS~1\Temp\ etc. etc. \Setup.exe

Also you seem to be familiar with host lists. Do you have any recommendations?
I know of mvps.org and Spybot. Also someonewhocares.org/hosts/Posted 15 years ago # -
Hmm... It looks like everything checks out. There shouldn't be anything wrong with Comodo, but it's the source of the problem, so I'm really out of ideas. All I have left is clear everything, uninstall with Revo Uninstaller, reboot, and reinstall.
I personally don't use hosts file to block anything as it's not very efficient. Instead, I use Privoxy for blocking most of the junk out there. Firefox has a phishing filter to try to warn you of the really bad stuff, avast! sometimes block bad sites, AdBlock Plus does a good job of removing ad elements, and I watch for Comodo's alerts. They do a pretty good job of preventing junk and bad sites.

Good advice, a reinstall usually works for me. Some times I forget the basics. I am always looking for that setting box to uncheck that fixes everything.
I will look into Privoxy. I'm always looking for ways to keep the bad guys at bay.
Thanks for sharing,

watch for Comodo's alerts. like giveawayoftheday set go out you say yes,now if you do not get a pop at setup change in firewall to tell you notify tick yes.

I have tried it all. I am using a Dell Optiplex and a Dell 8400. Firewall and anti-virus completely off. I have been having problems for sometime. Today I got an error message number when I tried to connect to activate "Remote Control PC" as well as the "failed to connect" message.
Error message: "Remote PC is unreachable error 10051"
For the last hour neither computer is able to download the GOTD offer. The error message: "failed to connect".
This problem has occurred before. Each time that I have had this problem (without any changes made on my part) the situation suddenly cleared and connections once again worked.
I have followed this topic for over a year. There has never been a solution for me. The problem has caused me to lose some nice programs. I have never seen a comment that the GOTD team has investigated the situation. I would appreciate a statement from them.

Disable all the security programs except for the Windows firewall then go into the Windows Control Panel and double-click on the "Network Connection" icon. Check the Local Area Connection Status and 1394 Connection. You can run a "Repair This Connection" from the task bar. Hope it helps....
