Hi raymel, you should be able to download hal.dll from the net. Just Google the library name and you'll probably find several download sites.
Here's the site I usually use when I require a .dll file. It's free. The link I've provided takes you to the Hal.dll download page:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?hal
The file needs to be copied into the following folder:
C:\Windows\System32
I also have a copy in C:\Windows\System
so I presume you need it copied into both system folders.

Raymel, you probably cannot even enter the command prompt when hall.dll is missing without the use of the recovery console available on every normal Windows Xp cd(maybe someone could launch the recovery console for you...)
You might also try using a bootable live linux cd or a BartPe/VistaPe cd(but you'll some need time to make one).
The easy way out is to launch your HP recovery disk(s) to put everything back to its original state.
In worst case,if everything above fails or if you don't have any recovery disks at hand, you'll need a partition manager to set the (probably hidden) recovery partition active, that is if you have the original HD in your computer.
Good luck.Posted 15 years ago # -
Good point Robert; I never thought about that.
If you ever created a boot floppy from Win 98 that'll work. Once you've booted the computer using that or any boot disc you should be able to find the appropriate place
i.e.C:\windows\syatem 32 and copy the dll over; you'll need to have the dll file copied onto the boot disc you are using though.
If my memory serves me correctly the command you need to type in would be:
Copy E:\hal.dll C:\Windows\System32\ (There is a space between hal.dll and C:\
repeat the procedure, but replace System32 with System.
That should copy the dll to both folders and hopefully solve your problem.
If you don't have a floppy or a bootable CD as Robert suggests you could get a friend to create one, (they are easy to create - if your or your friend aren't sure, just Google creating a bootable disc for windows XP, there will be loads of hits. Don't forget to add the hal.dll file to the boot disc as well otherwise the path I've given you above will not work).
The above paths I've used assume your DVD/CD drive is the E: drive and that you have windows installed onto the C: drive. If neither of our suggestions work, please do keep posting here. We will get it fixed for you.(hopefully). If you do have a floppy remember to replace the E: with an A:
I've still got my DOS manual somewhere, so if the above doesn't work, I'll search it out (though if it's in one of the boxes of books I have stored in the loft I won't be able to get it because since my accident I've not been able to get up there, lol).
I hate storing books in the loft, but had no space left anywhere in the house. Even one of my wardrobes is full to the top with them - I intended to build wall mounted bookshelves for the study before my accident; one of the many jobs I never quite got around to. I regret it now as I've already lost a pile of books that I'd 'temporarily@ stored in the garage. you can imagine what happened over a period of three damp winters. Suffice it to say, most of those books were recycled. :(
anyway, do let us know if you get the problem sorted.

Good thinking,WhiteRabbit!
I hope raymel didn't clean up other system files too though.
Speaking about dos commands, the "dir c: or d:" command might help to see if by any chance the I386 folder from the HP image cd was copied to his system.
If it were,DOS might help to launch the Winnt.exe.
Hey I should have them old dos books too somewhere...(or at least I had.LOL)
Maybe BuBBy could join the party.I bet his memory's still quite fresh and accessible... :) ...it has been a while since I used Dos commands.Raymel,as WhiteRabbit was saying ,please post again so maybe we can get your engine running again...

addendum to my post above:
I'm surprised you didn't get any disks with your laptop, or at least a recovery disk. When I bought a cheap/budget Emachine from Comet to take on vacation with me last month, that didn't come with a disk, but when I first booted it up I had to create two discs before I could proceed. The first was a recovery disc and the second copied all the drivers; (though I do have discs for Win 98, Win XP and vista, so it wouldn't have been a problem).
finally, if you could borrow an official XP disc from someone you should be able to boot from the DVD/CD reader, though ensure that the first boot priority is set to the DVD/CD drives. you can do this by going into bios, which you do by repeatedly pressing delete while the computer is booting up. When the bios set up opens up select the second option (the name escapes me); though some bios set ups have a separate tab for boot up so it should be easy to find. Once you have found it, make sure the DVD/CD is the first in the list, then select your Hard Drive, there's usuallt four or more spaces. The trhird one can be set to floppy if you have one (probably don't on a laptop).

thanks for the replies, its much appreciated. I ended up having to order restore disc from HP ($14.99) to get it fixed. Everything i needed to get to on my hard drive was in a partition that I simply could not get to. I did try to download hal.dll from a site, and burned it on cd, but that did absolutely nothing for me.
I have to wonder why so many keep suggesting to put hal.dll on a floppy disk, when for more time than I care to admit, the floppy disk hasnt been something that was in a laptop to be able to use.
as for my Laptop, I ended up losing everything I had on it and did a fresh Windows XP Home install on it. Not to worry, I usually burn my pic's on disc so I really didnt lose much.
I would like some suggestions on how to backup a laptop tho. I have no idea how to do a backup of a computer. thanks for the replies!!!
