Prototype is now released - (well in the morning). I got my copy through the post this yesterday (as a pre-oder). I'm starting to lean heavily towards buying all my large games via Steam now, simply because I don't need to use 'noDVD' patches, I can install the games to all my computers easily without the use of a disc and they are automatically updated as soon as an update is released. Plus, I've not got any more space on my book shelves for any DVD cases, I'm having to stash them in cupboards and drawers, lol. Though in the case of Prototype I've gone for the hard disc copy as it's much cheaper than buying it from Steam at this time. I'm sure several weeks down the line when sales have dipped, Steam will put it on a promotion and maybe even give it a free weekend play to those who've not purchased it; much like they did for Unreal Tournament 3 and Left 4 Dead. It's probably the best time to buy the game (assuming they do a promo). Unfortunately I no longer have any will power when it comes to games, lol.
All I can say about the game at this juncture is ...... so far it's brilliant. The world you inhabit is populated with hundreds of NPC's, you can roam relatively freely over quite a wide area of the city as well as climb skyscrapers, fly, and use some awesome weapons that become part of yourself. It is a little gory, but not overly so. I was hooked as soon as I started playing. A great trick for destroying helicopters is to pick up a truck (you have super powers) and chuck it at the chopper. A lot of the environments are destructible or at the very least decals are left behind showing structural damaged. Try smashing a building - cracks appear in the concrete around where you've hit it. All vehicles are destructible, and objects such as trees can be smashed to bits. Soooo, if you like to destroy stuff, this is the game for you.
If someone was watching over your shoulder they would think you were a whizz at using the keyboard as there are quite a few attacking moves your character can make using only combinations of your mouse buttons and a few keys. I must say I was impressed at how I was able to dispatch a whole squad of special forces and several tanks with just a few mouse clicks. If you buy this game you're going to see a lot of destruction and mayhem. There IS more to the game though......................... :)
