   Just thought I'd mention this.Maybe some of you missed the announcement made by Microsoft.

   As of March 12, 2009 POP3 access is free and available again to all Hotmail users.
   So you can use your favorite email program to retrieve and send messages with Hotmail.

   Enter these items into your email program, to configure the account:

   Account Hotmail:

   POP server: pop3.live.com
   (Port 995)
   POP SSL required? Yes
   User name: YourAccount@hotmail.com
   Password: Your password
   SMTP server: smtp.live.com
   (Port 25)
   Authentication required? Yes
   TLS/SSL required? Yes

   Robert, I tried that a bit back, and it didn't work - that was before March, 2009 though. I tried that with my comcast.net account, too, and at first it worked, but then stopped. Thanks for that info. :)

   hmm. I've been using hotmail for so long with Mozilla Thunderbird - that I had actually forgot how I was getting my mail off the hotmail servers. Just checked to see what I've been using and....

   Been a few years now - and it has been running so smoothly - I had forgotten it was there (truth is I don't give it much thought anymore).

   Sue,all former Hotmail accounts need to be linked nowadays with a windows live ID first.Maybe that's the reason why it stopped working.
   It's all about give and take I suppose...
   And it would be nice if Yahoo! joined the party.After all, GMail supports POP3 access too.

   I remember having problems too, when I first tried this.
   Had to go online first and login into my account that somehow reactivated itself(..my Inbox was completely empty).
   No problems since.
   Too bad I can't see your settings 'cause every little detail counts.
   What email clients did you try?

   Thanks Robert. Tried foxmail, another freeware (don't remember name)
   even thunderbird with hotmail and webmail plugins without suck-cess.

   Followed directions, tried many different settings and it all sucks.

   ps- what prog. do you use to make it work?

   (tested with Outlook Express,Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 portable (without plugins) and Windows live Mail)

    Thanks Sue.
    Actually the outgoing mail server preferably belongs to your ISP (smpt.your ISP - port 25)... or to the server where you setup your email account.(smpt.live.com - port 587)
    If you use the last one you might be asked now and then to decipher a captcha,due to anti-spam reasons.
    send-and-receive-windows-live-hotmail-emails-from-a-mail-client
    But somehow FF or my ISP didn't like it me using port 25 at that particular moment.

    Is how I set my accounts up with MailWasher professional v6.04.

    It configured ports automatically.
