Dear GAOTD: I downloaded, activated, and installed Smart Type Assistant on Feb. 18, the day it was offered. The activation and installation seemed to go right. I have verified the date by observing that the creation date of its Program Files folder is Feb. 18. Yet apparently the activation failed, because now each time I restart my computer, Smart Type Assistant displays a registration reminder, saying this is an evaluation copy. Is there any way to activate the program now? I really like this program, and do not want to lose it. I hope you can help me! Thank you in advance

Dear GAOTD: I was hoping you would respond to my plea and help me activate Smart Type Assistant! I thought I had activated it properly on the day it was offered, but apparently not. What went wrong? How can I fix it? Please help!

I posted here on the 19th of February in how you could tell whether Smart Type Assistant was registered or not.

If you are looking for a freeware utility like this, Schop recommended LetMeType. I found it at:

Dear BillW50: Thank you very much for the helpful suggestions!

Goodbye, GAOTD! I have received no reply from you despite my repeated pleas for help in activating Smart Type Assistant (see Activation forum, attempt to comment on March 8 download page, and your blog contact form). Since you have ignored me and provided no support, I can no longer recommend GAOTD on my public blog of utilities reviews. I am going to remove the link to your site.

The rules state basically you get an activation on the day of the giveaway only. If 2 weeks, or 6 months later something goes wrong and you cannot use the software - the GOTD deal with application supply and support ended at the end of the giveaway period.
After the 24 hour giveaway - if you cannot get your program running, you need to get in touch with the software developers website, and purchase a license in order to get support.
The giveaways don't come with support and the people who help in these forums are just ordinary users. I'm not... and I'm pretty sure Lee isn't getting rich answering GOTD questions either.

BuBBy some people don't read the information on the front page.
Bull & ChinaShop comes to mind.

Finally, a reply! I wish I could thank you for responding, BuBBy and Lee, but your responses are useless. If either of you had read my original post carefully, you would have noticed that I *DID* indeed activate the software on the very day it was offered. The activation appeared to work just fine, including the confirmation window. (I have downloaded and activated other programs from GAOTD, so I am quite familiar with the rules and with the activation procedure.) Then the next time I started the application, and each time since, it said it's an evaluation copy. So I wrote to ask if GAOTD could help me with some kind of re-activation, or extension, or whatever. What's wrong with that?

GOTD offers activation only for the 24 hour giveaway period. If at the end of that period for whatever reason you don't have a working copy of the software there is nothing GOTD can do. So if you accidentally "cleaned" your registry, reinstalled the application or just went around to a friends place for pizza and missed the giveaway altogether - GOTD is not obliged to give you an extension, slip you a new activation code or provide you with support of any kind.
That's a part of the deal:
Please note that the software you download and install during
the Giveaway period comes with the following important limitations:
1) No free technical support
2) No free upgrades to future versions
3) Strictly non-commercial usageI'm sure the program developers would be happy to help you reinstall, and provide support and upgrades for $20

I lost an activation of one program (I forget now what it was). But it happened the same day of the giveaway, so it was easy to reactivate. I believe this might be just a Windows XP bug. I haven't found any evidence that Windows 98SE or Windows 2000 does this yet. Nor I don't know what causes it.
There is only one thing I can think of which I have trouble from time to time and I hate this. And various Windows Updates will cause the Windows Shell to crash out of the blue. Of course, Windows Explorer automatically restarts and nobody is the wiser. Except some of your tray icons are now missing. This is the only sign I know of that just may cause Windows to dump the registry. Thus unsaved registry entries are lost.
Things that I believe that will save your registery are:
1) Rebooting your computer
2) Setting a System Restore point
3) Using something like ERUNT (freeware)
I have now switched from the Windows Explorer shell to Aston's Shell. So far (knock on wood) everything has been fine. :)

True BillW50, I forgot I was actually awake one morning, totally forgot about a giveaway I really wanted, then only realised I have to check the site at 7:58 a.m GMT, next day, time it took to DL and install I lost it.
No big deal now, just happens.
If anyone is interested it's All My Software http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/page/7/

BuBBy, thank you for reminding me of the GOTD rules, which I already know. I did not clean my registry, reinstall any applications, or miss the giveaway period. I don't know why the activation went bad. Why do you refuse to believe me? However, you have answered my original question. All I wanted to know was whether GOTD could do anything to help me, and you say no. But are you just another downloader, or do you speak officially for GOTD?
Lee, do you speak officially for GOTD? If so, is there anything GOTD can do to help me? That's all I wanted to know.
BillW50, perhaps you have hit on a clue, because I am using Windows XP. I haven't lost any tray icons or seen any other signs of trouble, though. Thank you for your concern.
