I've been getting the same problem as well :(
That sounds like a problem with your DNS provider, possibly an overloaded one which is common with ISP DNS servers. Check out OpenDNS.com to get an alternate DNS provider. You will find a how to there so it should be an easy change to make.
Got a quibble with you a little Pavid. I've seen this before from GOTD but not elsewhere. As I understand it, you're absolutely on top of it, the 502 is probably an overload. It actually means the two servers can't agree on a protocol, but since http is older than the hills, it's usually the result of a failure, such as an overload. Probably, however, the key clue is whether folks are only getting the error from one website. That likely indicates that the problem is on the website end. Probably not surprising that GOTD is experiencing overload problems, although today's software so far does not have an inordinate amount of votes or comments (which I realize only indirectly indicates how many downloads they're getting). Still, "stuff happens".
I'd say Buzz the only remedy here is patience.

Still, Pavid, that's a good suggestion. Gonna bookmark that. Thanks!
Me to to just got it, not alone.
have already got it some months ago :)
1) Does not appear to be DNS related, as I can get to the main site...
Only downloads and comment posting are so affected.
2) This is the ONLY site where I have such issues
3) The error appears to be generated from a back-end server issue at the site
ADDITIONAL:
Overloaded server appears to be accurate!
I just took the time to just repeatedly hit "reload" after getting the "502" and after several attempts it "took"!
Perhaps either a DoS attack or overload of traffic to their servers?
Hi guys,
it's Giovanni from Italy!!
Just a short note to inform you that I had the same problem as well but just in the AMERICAN FORUM of the GIVEAWAYOFTHEDAY website.
In fact in the ITALIAN FORUM, based on a different SERVER, I didn't encounter any problem at all to post a comment and/or download today's program, so for sure it's not a problem related to our DNS provider as PAVID said.
If you can't download the GAOTD in the American version of the website, just go to the Italian one and download the program from there.
As simple as that...LOL!!!
Cheers
Giovanni
Thanks to all for the useful information. I managed to sort the problem out in a 'roundabout' fashion ;) So now have it installed on all my computers. :)
Thanks for pointing that out, Giovanni! I forget sometimes that GOTD actually has 9 different sites in languages other than English for folks to try and get the download.
Just to keep the info flowing:
I got the same error: 502 Bad Gateway nginx/0.5.33
numerous times when trying to download MultiStage Recovery 24 hours ago, 12 hours ago, and about an hour ago. At 15 min. before the download period ended, I would not give up and finally connected. I just tried to DL the Wondershare giveaway for today and got shut out again! Same error. I am in the US. I have been online ALL day at a hundred websites or more and have had NO problem with ANY other website.
VR
I'm still getting the 502 bad gateway error today for the DVDripper. And can say the same as Vampire Rat wrt visiting loads of other sites and downloading. Ah well, I'm sure I can do without another DVD ripper, lol.
I'll second the recommendation for OpenDNS; it can protect you from all sorts of dodgy sites as well as being faster and more reliable than my own ISP's DNS (although that isn't difficult where Tiscali is concerned...) However my employer has a slight issue with me changing my works' IT systems to OpenDNS just so I can download some freebie. :P
Like Whiterabbit, I'm getting the 502 only for the download link. The giveaway page itself, and the forums (obviously) are fine. I don't know enough about website administration to speculate further - but please fix it, my employer's Internet connection is much faster. :)
Thanks for the clarification Watcher. I hadn't really thought about it being a server-side issue since it seems to happen most often with downloads. I am curious though. I have high speed cable and have not experienced this issue for at least the last 6 months. Although I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth and come here at different times of the day, How can I and others who have never experienced this problem be so lucky? I wonder if it's something to do with client side settings or drivers of the NIC card.
Another good point, Pavid. I've got 768 DSL lite from Bell South. Just thinking out loud, I'm still inclined to think it's server side, because, if not, we'd probably get reports of it practically every day. Then too, there's often potentially a lot between you and any one particular website, as you know from pinging and using Tracer Route. Maybe the problem is with some gateway that's between the GOTD server and some users. It wouldn't hurt to hear about the ISP and setup of anyone else who's gotten the error, and maybe there is a network card setting that could be tweaked. Still, there's so many variables.... You might be right all along that something like OpenDNS may be more friendly towards the process. I guess there's no way anybody's going to know without experimenting next time. This is one of those times when I wish the good folks at GOTD would be more communicative.
Just to add: I'm still getting 502 from home. Different ISP, different DNS, different computer. A Google search turned up this explanation, which makes sense to me:
http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E502.html
I'm gathering from this that the link is trying to redirect to another server capable of handling GAOTD's download bandwidth, still under the giveawayoftheday domain, but for some reason it doesn't want to communicate. Why that should be so for some visitors and not others is a mystery to me.
Anyway, no DVD Ripper Platinum for me today. :(
Bob, read up a couple of posts. See Giovi above. You should be able to get it from one of the foreign language sites.
Thanks for reminding me, watcher. I was posting late at night and not thinking straight. Of course I had read the whole thread earlier in the day (doesn't everybody? :P) but forgot about it later. I see I repeated your link as well, so apologies for that.
I'm still getting 502'ed today. I successfully downloaded the giveaway from http://es.giveawayoftheday.com/ - my Spanish is the best out of the languages on offer - however you don't really need to speak the lingo to download because the page layout is the same. I'd have been really mad if I'd missed Music Making for MS Word since I just got back into music making.
I've sent a message via the contact form in case the powers that be have missed this thread.
I'm in the Netherlands. error 502.
Actually, Bob, I should apologize. It seems logical that a vet like you would know that. For that reason, your post surprised me a little. As to the link, I believe in the double check, and believe me sometimes my posts can use a double check. Like the one I did recently wondering what happened to another thread I started. Never occurred to me that someone might have been conscientious enough to temporarily convert it to a sticky since they thought it was important. Ergo, it was right in front of me. Oops! Is it morning, yet? LOL.
No worries, mate. Some of my posts surprise me, too. :-)
freebird, did you use the Dutch GAoTD site, or the English one? It's only of passing interest to me, but the site owners may find that data useful.
@English Bob, I used the english one. and there I had the error. after that didn't work I used the Dutch one. and that one DID work.
I usually prefer the English one for the comments. ;-)
