Thank you, rezidue, such a clonething comes just in time for me.
Does anybody have some experiences with this tool?Posted 15 years ago # -
I do not know this tool. However it is important to distinguish between "copy" your hard drive and creating and "image/clone" of your hard drive. If clonezilla does not image/clone your hard drive bit by bit, in my opinion it is not a tool you would want to use. I would suggest Acronis True Image. Choose the "Manual" option and then the "proportional" option.
Clonezilla doesn't look very intuitive to me. It looks like the size of the image you can make is limited to the size of the media you have the clonzilla program on. Acronis is well worth the investment.

Here's the info regarding Clnezilla copied directly from the link aboce:
What is Clonezilla ?
You're probably familiar with the popular proprietary commercial package Norton Ghost®, and its OpenSource counterpart, Partition Image. The problem with these software packages is that it takes a lot of time to massively clone systems to many computers. You've probably also heard of Symantec's solution to this problem, Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition® with multicasting. Well, now there is an OpenSource clone system (OCS) solution called Clonezilla with unicasting and multicasting!Clonezilla, based on DRBL, Partition Image, ntfsclone, partclone, and udpcast, allows you to do bare metal backup and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the harddisk. This increases the clone efficiency. At the NCHC's Classroom C, Clonezilla SE was used to clone 41 computers simultaneously. It took only about 10 minutes to clone a 5.6 GBytes system image to all 41 computers via multicasting!
Features of Clonezilla
Free (GPL) Software.
Filesystem supported: ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs of GNU/Linux, FAT, NTFS of MS Windows, and HFS+ of Mac OS (testing feature provided by partclone). Therefore you can clone GNU/Linux, MS windows and Intel-based Mac OS. For these file systems, only used blocks in partition are saved and restored. For unsupported file system, sector-to-sector copy is done by dd in Clonezilla.
LVM2 (LVM version 1 is not) under GNU/Linux is supported.
Multicast is supported in Clonezilla SE, which is suitable for massively clone. You can also remotely use it to save or restore a bunch of computers if PXE and Wake-on-LAN are supported in your clients.
Based on Partimage, ntfsclone, partclone, and dd to clone partition. However, clonezilla, containing some other programs, can save and restore not only partitions, but also a whole disk.
By using another free software drbl-winroll, which is also developed by us, the hostname, group, and SID of cloned MS windows machine can be automatically changedRegards

I'd suggest trying to find a free version of Acronis. There's been some given away previously a few months ago. If you Google the program you may find a site that's still giving older versions away. I don't have it in my bookmarks as I've just recently done a fresh install of windows. I bought the latest version of Acronis True Image, but haven't used it yet.

You all probably already know this, but in case you don't. "Free download" does not mean free program. Nothing like investing hours in a "free scan" only to find out you have to pay $50 to repair the "errors". I never download anything I see as "free" in an advertizement on a web page. If you're looking for free stuff ask about it here or check top 20 downloads at http://www.download.com.
There's also a nasty nasty *)*)&^*^&^*&^#$%^&*(@@@!!!! virus going around that mimics a free scan antivirus program. If one day your browser disappears and some antivirus you never downloaded pops up on your machine shouting FREE immediately disconnect from the internet (it's downloading viruses onto your computer)...hit the Ctrl+Alt+Del once together to bring up Task Manager and kill the application. Then run Malwarebytes and any other Antimalware application you happen to have on hand like Spybot, Adaware, etc. before you do anything else on your computer. If you click "no", "yes", "cancel" or "X" on the fake antivirus window you are allowing it to install on your system. You can get it from almost anyweb site. I got it from a Bible babyname site. If you leave the fake program on your computer it can worm it's way into programs you open and cause more damage...like recently it password protects your documents and you have to pay to get them unpassworded. It even makes hardware like CD players not work.
Sorry to get off topic. But I saw the free download crap everywhere when I was looking for free acronis. You can also get on some dangerous web pages searching for free programs. If you got Returnil a while back, that is good to use when going to unfamiliar sites. You just restart your computer to get rid of anything you or some malicious somebody else did during that surfing session. If you find a program during the surfing session you want to keep you have to save it to a flash drive or burn it to CD to keep it after the reboot. You turn Returnil off then to go back to normal mode. I downloaded it after my latest round with the fake anti-virus I mentioned above, but I never can remember whether I have it on or off...
I can't believe I forgot to recommend http://www.techsupportalert.com. Gizmo has several great free programs reviewed on his site. Also has one for disk imaging...http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-drive-imaging-program.htm
Clonezilla clones. You should always check your cloned drive by making sure your computer will work with only it connected instead of the drive you copied. Maybe someone who is not a amateur like me can check it out for us. It was really nice of rezidue to share it with us!
If you have a Seagate hard disk you can use their version of Acronis--Seagate DiscWizard http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=DiscWizard&vgnextoid=d9fd4a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD
If you have a Maxtor hard disk you can use their version of Acronis--MaxtorMaxBlast

Thanks for the info Pennedragon. Yes I have the seagate disc wizard. I've found it very useful. Did you manage to find a free copy of Acronis? I wish there was a way I could pass on the free copy I got as having bought the latest version I've no need for the one that was given away (not via the giveaway project) with a full activation code.

Whiterabbit, I didn't find it free. None of my security software is updating for some reason...so I got side-tracked. Putzing with my firewall. Then I got frazzled and started watching funny cat videos...
Just found out my comments aren't kosher... so I'll be minding my own bees wax from now on. I certainly appreciate the good work you do in the forums! Got a rock with my name on it to crawl under.

@penneddragon:
Not sure why they are not kosher, but I appreciate them. I knew some of it, but ALWAYs appreciate a reminder. Also, didnt know all that about cloners/etc. Though I have been wondering about that after my last.. um...fustercluck. Im still trying to sort through this whole Windows XPe embedded ...blah blah blah.. sorry. I cant really say I understand it, but have a step by step guide to do it. Something about getting the latest update driver for my USB drives so they can run at 2.0 instead of 1.1It is the above stuff that really shows me how little I really know. I love having my XP back, but MAN what a cost.
Best Wishes,

fustercluck - reminds me of Clint Eastwood, lol - Heartbreak Ridge
Posted 15 years ago # -
LOL I didnt think of that at the time, but could be.. that is one movie that I love (and own). Also, love Clint and have a lot of respect for him with all his accomplishments. I have several of those little things I say to try to keep my language a bit cleaner and more PG when I get upset. Not that they are my discoveries in anyway, but picked them up from others. I had a friend that started going to church and realized he had a horrible time not using 'Jesus Christ' when he would get upset about something and his preacher/reverent got him to replace it with 'cheese n rice'. Sometimes he would have that burst out of his mouth and I couldnt do anything but laugh.
Sorry to ramble off topic,

Acronis True Image does have some features not found in Clonezilla; however, those features are not part disk cloning. If you just need to clone your drive, then there is no reason to spend $50 for True Image when Clonezilla will do it for free.
When it comes to just cloning, the only major difference is cost.

If you look thru Gizmos' achieves, I believe you'll find the info you need to get a free version a acronis7, I think it is?

Thanks, GrouchE. I'm like pennedragon - and I'll bet you are, too - I think Gizmo's excellent site is worth looking at, period.
