I downloaded and installed the Free Video Joiner (I was directed here from the download site). I selected 2 files to join, came back later and it had finished. I then played the new file and discovered there's no audio at all throughout the file. What do I do about this?

If you do a Google search, you'll find several programs that do join, some work great, some not so great. Could be the one you have is limited which would affect the outcome.
The best program I've used is Apollo Divx2DVD creator.. which is now known as ZC Video DIVX to DVD creator. That program will convert your avi to make ready to burn on a DVD and you can add several files before converting, such as part 1 and part 2. I've not had any problems with that. Some older ones had the audio and video, but the lips weren't synched which was a pain.
