Just wondering why - thanks.
Why was my Acronis post closed? Please explain.

Probably because
1) That deal was not for the general public
and
2) You posted links to a download off rapidshareThat is just my guess though - I am no mod.

If it's offered by a magazine isn't that to the general public?
And rapidshare is just a download site - just because that's where it's hosted does not mean it's illegal.
Without the serial - obtained directly from Acronis via their registration link, it's just a trial.
So, as long as you're getting a bona fide serial from Acronis (while the offer link is still valid) I don't see a problem - people share offers by conversation, email, etc. I have version 8 personal edition from nearly a couple of years ago and opted in to get Acronis updates without ramification. I don't remember how I found out about it at the time...
Yes this offer would have been from PCMag somehow - my guess is from their website as I'm a subscriber to it but don't remember a blurb about it in the actual mag. I've already forgotten how I came across this myself!
Anyway, sorry for the original post...

We have been approached by at least one magazine site, and asked to remove all posts with details of the promotions for their magazine readers. In this case it was a promotion between Acronis and another magazine publisher.
While from a users point of view it's a case of "yippee free software". The magazine has likely negotiated a number of licenses to be given away by the vendor. The vendor may have agreed to do so for free, or for a nominal cost per license to be paid for by the magazine.
For example, in the case where a magazine might negotiate for up to 100,000 copies of the software to be downloaded and license keys to be provided - when it is leaked to the general internet - it becomes clear that legitimate magazine readers might miss out, or the magazine might end up having to make a payment to the software developer when 10x the negotiated amount is given away - and the download servers have to be taken offline because the users the promotion was intended for, cannot access them due to the unexpected load.
So in fairness to those who organise the promotions, and the intended participants - we will not be promoting 2nd hand promotions - or the sites with 2nd hand promotions on them. These sites are actually doing a disservice to everyone - they do not organise their own promotions, only hijack the promotions of others.
If a promotion is being run by the developer on their own site - then we will and should mention and direct users to that site (eg. if Zonelabs is giving away ZoneAlarm - we will provide a link to their site).
If the giveaway is between two other parties - eg a magazine and developer, or a bank and a developer - we will need to get approval to publish the details as the promotion may not be open for the general internet.

If you don't play by the rules the developers may just stop giving.

Exactly - or others - like magazine publishers might decide it is too much hassle and just not worth it (when some exclusive benefit they organise for their readers, gets leaked and becomes available for all, or made unavailable for the intended audience).
Just get permission from the developers first - don't assume it is OK to publish the details of someone elses offer.
