   I spent a far few hours, trawling, googling, copernic'n and using my own skillz
   to find a way of changing file associations.

   Really, I spent about 12 hours over 3 days during my spare time.

   Anyway, the problem seemed to be that all temp files would open only with notepad and their association (.tmp) was corrupted.

   So I hacked registry not work, soon as I rebooted, went back to same association, I
   downloaded some double click reg files to fix problem, same thing, went back to notepad association, I then went via windows vista file association changing, I even downloaded Creative Element PowerTools v2.9.920 freeware, still not working.

   So I then thought, lets create a new account and build my settings how I like them and
   then delete my older account and be done.

   I created a new admin account, then found errors in it such as not been able to show hidden files, which defeated the object of checking temporary files as I could not navigate to them without hacking the registry to repair.

   It was getting near my 20:00 bedtime when I deleted that account (new one) rebooted and went to user > Lee > AppData > Local > Temp and to my shock all the temp files were correct, not corrupted and said blahblah.TMP.

   Anyone have any idea why this may have happened, because I get the feeling if you create a new account the settings are newer so other problems maybe repaired when it came to a dodgy entry in the registry.

   Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium saved my soul yesterday, as I was going mad.

   The only thing with temp is they are temp so Delete them you don't need only for one time like setup the end can use ccleaner to clean all old temp.
   some more info may help like file association changing like? exe? txt? or right click open with & chang as you like.

   Thats my point they could not be changed to anything else.

   Could not change a .tmp to a .exe or .anything else before doing what I did.

   Some of my .tmp files have to stay in temp folder as they are being used by other applications such as 3M sticky notes.

   Obviously if the files are in use, you cannot rename them or change the file extension.

   Are you sure the files you had trouble with weren't open files?

   From the command line you can view or change file associations with the 'ASSOC' command.

   All of the file association (eg *.txt) info is stored in

   HKCU \ Software \ Classes \ .txt

   and

   HKLM \ Software \ Classes \ .txt

   (Trashing the Classes registry tree - will pretty much trash your windows entirely).

   If the problem was fixed by creating a new user account, chances are there was a problem with your HKCU registry under Classes. The new user inherited a clean/fixed Classes tree.

   Looks as if creating a new admin account did some repairing...
   Glad you've got it fixed and thanks for sharing.
   I will be adding your comment and BuBBy's ASSOC [.ext[=[fileType]]] to my bag of tricks.
   :)
   My first thought would be restoring an Automatic Backup of the Registry using ERUNT .
   (I use ERUNT with the "/days:7" switch)

   Most Registry Cleaners have an option to exclude (from Cleaning) items such as ActiveX, Class & Type Libraries - Generally it is a good idea to exclude the entire 'Classes' tree from scanning (unless you know how to repair it by hand - or the report showing which keys will be deleted, actually means something to you).

   Remember a trashed "Classes tree" in the registry is very very bad.

   Thats what I was thinking Robert.

   I also noticed that my system was faster.

   It's like creating an admin account under Lee S then booting, deleting account
   gave it a good kick up the keister.

   some info may help like way changing file associations!!!!! will System Restore fix,or try " sfc /scannow " you need you CD it check if dll's are ok! to reset reg to to original seting may make bad as some Program may not like just refit may work I not like to try up to you," regsvr32 /i shell32 " not work go to new.
