   I successfully upgraded to Win 11 yesterday. I noticed that the exe I found for Win 10 to install the old Windows games on newer OSs didn't do anything. I thought it was just that program. Today, I tried running an install for a beta game and it did the same thing. I KNOW this file is fine. I installed the previous release of the game the other day but held off on the latest update until after my upgrade. It does NOTHING! No error, no message, just a spinning circle for a few seconds and then nothing!

   This implies that all my installs will fail. I shouldn't have to play with the registry to do what I've done thousands of times in the past. What do I have to do to get this ability back?

   HELP!!!!

   Just guessing, because I've not had anything not run in Win11 -- maybe I'm just lucky? Apparently you can right-click on some game installers, select properties, and click unblock. One link from Googling suggests running the exe file from a command prompt running as admin. Several said to make sure VBS [the memory-based virtualization for security] is off. You can check if Defender blocked the app and add an exception, though I'd expect Defender to quarantine the app if it thought it was malware.

   I think part of the problem is that the install is a self-extracting zip. I did expand the exe into a folder (using 7zip) and was able to run "setup.exe". It looked right but didn't do anything! When I renamed the folder it was supposed to over-write so it would create it itself, it did NOTHING! I have an email out to EKS software for help. Everett may be retired but he's still updating some of his old games (Descartes Rainbow in this case).

   Check "Settings" > "Apps" > "Advanced App Settings" and at the top of the page where it says "Choose where to get apps" make sure that it's not set to "The Microsoft Store only (recommended)". Change to "Anywhere" if it is.

   If it's set to "The Microsoft Store only" the system will not allow you to install a program from your hard drive.

   Bingo!!!! Thank you very much. That solved the problems. I was able to run both Kaser's beta game and the old Windows 7 games installs.

   As my husband said -- "That's a stupid default". Letting them do my installs is not gonna happen!

   Hmmm... learned something - Thanks Chris

   Your husband's right, it's stupid. I never set that option, and don't believe I've ever seen it actually, and it's set to anywhere already -- wonder when they changed the default? Back in 2015 when Win10 was new I remember setting the default install location to the micro SD card on my tablet, but that's the first and last time I've ever gone into anything similar.
