Microsoft originally published a registry entry that you could add to skip the hardware compatibility check, but that, along with adding registry entries under LabConfig [published elsewhere], will not work to upgrade from Win11 23H2 to 24H2 on unsupported hardware today. Another method [the one Rufus uses] is to replace appraiserres.dll with a dummy file -- that no longer works to upgrade, & hasn't for a while now. A 3rd method, running setup.exe /product server
, works today, but according to Neowin, may not work tomorrow. Now, Neowin's reporting is based on user experience with an Insider Canary build, so there's a chance that the change may never be implemented, but there's also a good chance that it will.
Because of that, it could make good sense to upgrade any devices running Win11 on hardware that does not meet official requirements soon, before the official 24H2 release date. I used an ISO from the Insider Release Preview channel from late May [5/23/24] and it worked in a VM today. I just downloaded the latest for the Release Preview channel, 26100.1150, & will post if it works as well in the next day or so. I expect people much smarter than me will come up with new bypass methods if necessary in the future, but worse case, I believe that a 4th method would be harder for Microsoft to block; you can copy the install.wim file from one ISO and paste it in another. I've done it early on with Win11, and it worked using the ISO for Win10 1809. That's not a guarantee that it'll work with Win11 24H2, but I don't see how Microsoft could block it [but again, there are smarter people than me]. For that reason I'm holding on to the late May ISO, &/or the new one *if* it works too.
