   AMD's new Ryzen CPUs just hit store shelves, and of course there's a big rush to benchmark the chips. And there have been problems, with people getting inconsistent results for example. So naturally, people have been digging deeper to try and figure out why. And that's where this tip comes in... enabling the hidden admin account leads to better performance, not just with the new 9000 series, but with the last generation 7000 series as well.

   For those wondering, the Administrator Account on Windows is generally hidden but can be accessed by using the command:

   net user administrator /active:yes

   It has one of the highest privileges in the Windows environment, surpassed only by the SYSTEM Account.

   Reports and info about AMD's new 9000 series CPUs is still a bit of a muddled mess. Intel's problems even come into play -- some benchmarks were done comparing AMD to Intel at minimal voltage guidelines *before* Intel's patched BIOS firmware, and some were performed at higher voltages after installing that patch. And as AMD tries to calm things down and make sense of it all, they've explained that there are optimizations for Ryzen CPU's branch prediction that are available when running as admin. They are also working with Microsoft on a Windows update that will provide Ryzen-specific optimizations that will benefit all Ryzen CPUs, not just the 9000s, though the 9000 series will see the biggest boost. There's no word yet on when this update will be available other than "soon", but AMD indicates it will be for Win11 24H2. AMD does not say whether this update or patch will go beyond what you get running Windows as admin. That said, the 9000 CPUs have been found to be significantly faster in Linux compared to Windows, so it seems that there's a fair amount of optimization that could be added to Windows.

   Neowin is the only site AFAIK that talked about running Windows as Admin. by activating the *hidden* account via the Command Prompt. It seems unclear whether that provides any benefit vs. just using an Admin. account instead of logging in as a regular user. Microsoft has included the patch to enable enhanced branch prediction in the Win11 August Optional Update, but if you're already using an Admin. account, maybe you won't notice any benefits? Tom's Hardware is working on benchmarking Ryzen CPUs to measure any increases in performance after applying the patch or update, and hopefully will give folks an idea of what to expect, particularly if you're not running the brand new 9000 series CPUs.

   Tom's Hardware published the first of their new benchmarks on AMD's Ryzen CPUs with the new Windows patch installed, showing generally a 2 or 3% boost depending on the CPU. Unfortunately they only tested the new 9700, 9600, and the 7700 & 7600 -- hopefully they've eventually get around to older Ryzen chips -- though I guess it doesn't really matter since we're all getting the Windows patch as part of the monthly cumulative update.

   Using a Ryzen 5800X3D, Computer Base ran a series of benchmarks in Win11 24H2 [I assume with the new patch], in Win11 23H2 with the new patch, in Win11 23H2 without the patch, and in both with VBS on/off. The patch helps, & so does turning off HVCI / HECI / VBS -- Win11's Virtualization-based Security that's the reason for Win11's hardware requirements.
