   I have a win 11 laptop (upgraded from win 10). It's not often used. However, I do turn it on regularly and check for updates and virus check (mainly to keep windows happy).

   A month or so ago, it showed an optional preview update. Unlike most updates, an update check did not start the update automatically but just told me it was there. I never got the Patch Tuesday update for April. Until today, I didn't get the May update until I decided to let it download and install the optional update.

   Once it finally came back after the restart, I let it set to "settle" (it's not the fastest device in the house). Then I looked for updates again and it finally found such as that monthly Malicious Tool Remover and two other updates. Why would an OPTIONAL update block the standard monthly updates from running?

   It should not. I have used the show/hide troubleshooter from Microsoft [wushowhide.diagcab] to hide an update, so I could then check for updates -- the check for updates button is disabled if there's an available update listed -- but Microsoft's doing away with all troubleshooters so it may not work much longer. I have had something similar to what you experienced happen, and the fix was to delete the Windows\ SoftwareDistribution\ folder, so Windows Update started with a blank slate. In the past that was a Microsoft recommended fix, but the last time I did it Windows wouldn't let me because some of the files were in use. When stopping the Windows Update service & processes did not help, I booted to another copy of Windows [Windows To Go drive] & deleted it.

   I think the most likely explanation is that Windows Update had a problem that was resolved when you installed the optional update. There is a Windows Update Troubleshooter that you could run but it would probably be a waste of time at this point.

   Just FWIW, in Win11 when you try to run a troubleshooter it may or may not open/run -- for me it's been about 60/40 -- won't run/run -- with the compatibility troubleshooter with the older games on the weekend. The Win11 Windows Update troubleshooter also has this message: "Troubleshooters have moved and this tool will be retired." with a link to the following:

   support.microsoft[.]com/en-us/windows/deprecation-of-microsoft-support-diagnostic-tool-msdt-and-msdt-troubleshooters-0c5ac9a2-1600-4539-b9d0-069e71f9040a

   I believe the reason was security vulnerabilities in the underlying tech. Per that support page:

   If you're running Windows 11 version 22H2 and older, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 or any other earlier OS version, your device will not be affected by the MSDT Troubleshooter retirement. Earlier OS systems will continue to run the legacy inbox troubleshooters.

   The estimated deprecation timeline will take place over the next three years:

   2023 – Begin redirecting some of the troubleshooters to the new Get Help troubleshooting platform

   2024 – Complete the troubleshooter redirection and remove the rest of the troubleshooters

   2025 – Remove the MSDT platform
